best intake and exhaust
i'm finally gonna get my 91 n/a on saturday! ive been looking around for intakes and exhausts. i just wanted to know which kind of cold air intake and exhaust is the best for RX-7's. thanks.
Best performance you can buy from exhaust is the mazdatrix true duals.(sit down when you look at the price) and any true CAI designed properly will do but ofcoarse I have made one for the N/a which will fit your N/a and there are other companies that sell similar ones but chances are that your broke and poor just like all the other guys on here so just make your own from universal parts and you'll save maybe 30 bucks.

The true duals can come with either muffler. Both HKS and RB are straight through so its just more bling bling cost for HKS stuff and I have heard its louder with HKS cans. I own the RB setup.

Oh crap does LA mean LA california? if it does then forget it. You will get a ticket for no smog lol. Any aftermarket upgrades in cali are illegal AFAIK. But they aren't that loud but I haven't taken a DB meter to them yet.
There are only three CAI's(real ones not CAI wannabe's) and they are all based on the same thing steel pipe routed to the front of the car. I also think you have to be approved by the state of california to be smog legal which costs the vender $$ so yeah I am not going to pay for that. As it is I am in the red.

As for the intakes, I think the Apex'i intake is the best. There was a test conducted on a Supra using the Apex'i, HKS, K&N, and one other filter that I cant think of. They dyno'ed them then attatched them to a vaccuum cleaner to test which one filtered the best. I think they all produced within 1 HP gains - between 13 and 14 HP (note, this is on a mrkIV supra turbo) As for the filtering, the Apex'i was the excellent and the K&N was very good, but the HKS was just plain awefull. I'll try to dig up the link to the article.
the only carb legal (as far as i know) intake kit for the FC is the hks super mega flow, however i don't recall if its for an s4 or s5. i run an apex'i intake and never got into trouble with it in LA, however you can't pass smog with it.
as for exhaust, mine was pretty loud (racing beat header, presilencer, and borla exhaust), but i had no problems as long as i didn't do stupid stuff around cops. no emissions either...just be sure to keep your emissions so you can pass smog check later, either that or you will have to get an un legal one.
edit: stay away from N1 style mufflers if you are worried about being too loud. my buddies FC with header, presilencer and dual N1's gives me a headache when i ride around in it...and i can hear him from half a mile down the street.

Ok, heres the article: http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/
The other filter was the Blitz filter. Another thing thats better about the Apex'i filter is that its a dry filter (no oil on the filter) that requires no maintenence and never needs to be replaced.

I searched for a good while too but its still not worth buying a filter that expensive to me.
The best filter is a K&N filter. All other similar filters copied off thier design.
True Duals make some good power. But $1200 for exhaust is alittle too pricy for me. You could make an exhaust for much cheaper and get similar results. Same with intake, buy a K&N filter and adapter, and route some cold air to the filter. Then box off the cold air from the engine bay.

AFAIK, the Apex filter is supposed to be replaced after a set amount of miles just like other OEM dry type filters.
