My 1990 non turbos clutch has lasted about 67k and will probably still last a bit longer. But when i decide to get a new one whats the bang for the buck clutch? Or should i just go oem? Car is stock btw

 

Search Ebay for a 1990 Rx7 Exedy clutch. I believe Exedy was the OEM brand, and it's a high quality clutch for a non-turbo. I installed an OEM Exedy on my turbo convertible, but now it's dying a painful death because I'm putting almost twice the power through it. It's taking it like a champ (not chattering, and hasn't exploded yet).

If for some reason you decide to go with another brand, stick with a well-known company. ACT, Centerforce, Spec, etc. Do not try using a cheap no-name clutch, as I have found out the hard way that you'll be replacing it soon. I bought one from Autozone when I first got my car. After about 1000 miles, the pressure plate began to cause a very annoying chatter.

Summary:
In my opinion, the best bang for buck clutch is the Exedy OEM.

Exedy says beware of knock-offs on Ebay. The Exedy oem replacement clutch kit is 135.79 from rockauto.com. Pretty much the same money as Ebay. I would and did get one from them. I too believe Exedy is the oem manufacturer. I know when I rebuilt my engine in '98 I bought a stock clutch from Mazdatrix. When I pulled the engine after it locked up this past spring the clutch was still good. Approx. 147000miles. Upon inspection it was an Exedy. You may still have abit of life left depending on the type of driving. Mine was mostly highway miles.

 

Being aware of knockoffs on Ebay is generally a good rule in the first place. I forgot about Rock Auto. They're probably a much safer bet.

I forgot to mention Perfection Clutch. They do a lot of R&D on their clutches, and I do believe that most parts stores sell them. And they do have a really good warranty as well, so if anything goes wrong with it you can literally just give Perfection a phone call.

 

OEM was made by Daikin, which is now owned by exedy. the quality is probably actually better now after the switch.

 

Don't use any crappy Ebay clutch no matter what your friends tell you.

Don't fall for the fancy names...F1 Racing ,,SUPER DUPER RACING ... STAGE 1, stage 2 ...whatever.
I've seen cheap discs fall apart .

 

I only use exedy myself. They perform well and are durable.

 

Another Exedy suggestion here. I got the stage 1 installed just a few weeks ago along with the Competition Clutch lightweight forged steel flywheel and I really like it. Clutch engagement is smooth yet plenty of bite. Just feels really solid and I love it.

 

I have the Exedy stage 1 on my MX-5 and really like it compared to the stock Exedy.
