Best bang for the buck MOD wise?

What if you only could do one MOD a year and your spending limit was around 500 to 800 bucks what would some of you experts do first? I'm talking engine wise,on a stock 13b N/A.What I am asking is what will get the best bang for the buck?

sell all your NA stuff, take that money plus your $500-$800 and get a turbo swap

There is a thread somewhere that a guy with a header and an SAFC/RTek gained like 15whp or something.

Search for it.

Than search for all the other answers!

i agree with the turbo swap if you save up... if not going that route tear it down and get a street port/bridge port done on it first thing... that would be the most power out of it before doing bolt ons

Let the car get Air..and be able to Breathe..so Realistically(instead of the Go TII ****),get an aftermarket Cone filter,a Cold air intake setup, and an Exhaust that will flow better, like a Racing Beat Road race system.A header is a Perfect start..it replaces the 40 pound Stock Exhaust manifold(Boat anchor!),and that is a Weight saver right there..you can always Skim the weight down, but Honestly You either will Gut the Car or Keep it Nice on the interior...Sound Systems are a Weighty Product,so Think about If you want a 200 pound Boom Box of subs Floating around in the back of the car too!./.(I'm old,a Stereo is a Stereo!)..you can Relocate the battery to the rear bin to Relocate weight...ETC,ETC..anyhow some Stuff I thought may be useful to ya..Good luck...Oh,,Good wheels and a Half decent suspension also.It may not be a POWER ADDER,but it is a Performance Enhancer, allowing the car to be put through it's paces with ease rather than Straining around corners..it Gives the car a Whole new feel..

What happend to the 240? ^

These engines need to breath. Free flowing LEGAL exhaust, SAFC, True CAI or airbox, Series5 (89-91) Intake manifold swap, Dyno Tune.

You should have money left over from above. Mine pulls like a rapped date still even after I pulled the SAFC out, it was faster with it in. I had S5 rotors as well..

One guy dynoed his 89 car at 162 RWHP. with just exhaust, SAFC and intake.

All these suggestions are fine. But my suggestion would be based on how the car is to be used. If it's a play car or a race car, and you have another car for a DD, then these mods would be fine. If this car is your DD, then my suggestion would be first upgrade the exhaust by adding a good catback system and presilencer (exhaust modded N/A's can be loud) and then suspension work starting with replacement of the worn and old bushings, followed by 4 lug to 5 lug conversion and replacement wheels and tires from the stock 14" to 16" or 17". Just my $0.02 worth.

full exhaust and fuel tuning, SAFC is cheapest but Rtek would be preferable. Everything else is a bunch of work for very little hp-- 1 or 2 here, 1 or 2 there.

Full tune up; I just did new plugs and wires for the first time on my 15k rebuild, and ZOMG the car pulls a good deal harder than it used to, and runs smoother. I'd say if your car needs a tune-up, you could easily be losing 5-10hp that could be gained back by plugs and wires. My engine builder says that NGK plugs and wires are preferable; I've actually had bad luck with Borg-Warner wires in the past.

For $500-800, I would try to buy:
Year 1: used RB true dual exhaust
Year 2: Wheels/tires, and 5-lug swap if necessary.
Year 3: intake bolt-ons, maybe fuel computer (I haven't gotten that far yet)
Year 4: save for year 5
Year 5: supercharge!

I second the exhaust suggestions

Adding a RB exhaust to my N/A made a noticable difference... of course, my old Cat was also clogged up pretty good.
NOTE: where I live, there is no emmision testing, or safety checks, you can run straight pipe here

Central Oregon,... I swear you can have a milk crate, or lawn chair, for a front seat here and no one (law enforcement wise) would give a ****, and not to mention about anything you do under the hood

Sign me up... CA laws are ridiculous.

First thing you do should be a good tuneup, then exhaust. Maybe get a K&N filter to replace the stock one.

I think the cheapest mod is block off plates for emission removal.
Also gutting your cat (catalitic converter).

Wow thanks for all the ideas guys. The guy I bought the 7 from already re did the suspension and lowered it a bit, ie handles like a go cart. I do need new tires and I plan on getting some soon however thats not part of my mod money. I changed the plugs on it Tuesday I think it helped out my gas mileage but I am not 100%. Next up is the rest of the fluids and maybe repacking the wheel bearings. BTW this car is going to be a autocross car with maybe some fun day off driving. My 93 civic is my DD.
