Beginners project 91 n/a asking for help

What would be the first things to do to a stock 91 n/a to gain more power?

Should I go for A straight pipe or a hi-flow catalyst? I'm not sure if I want to go with a straight pipe set-up because of emissions but I wanted to ask on other opinions

Should I change out the intake for a newer one?

I just dont know where I should start. Thanks to all who will help me with ideas for my project.

If you swap you'd want to put a TII engine in if you want a turbo. Otherwise, keep your engine. Either way, port it when it's rebuilt.

1. You have a 91 N/A. GTU, GTUs or GXL?
2. How much power do you want?
3. How much money do you have?

Please read the FAQ and take a look in the Archives for a topic "how to make a beefy n/a". Those two threads will probably answer 90% of your questions.

If you have to pass emissions, your only choice is a cat. Honestly it's the best choice anyway since it keeps the noise under control, prevents the car from smelling horrible, is nice to the environment, etc. etc.

I wonder if that's the reason you got the Insight (Other than I know how much you like electronics), to offset the crap your 7 was throwing into the Atmo

Wait, time out! wasnt there only a coupe, convertible, and turbo available in 91? I thought that all n/a from 91 were just consitered the coupe but with slightly different options. And I thought that the GTUs was only made in 89 and 90. Correct me if im wrong.

Yeah, there was coupe/convertible/Turbo.. It wasn't even called TII. It was just "Turbo Coupe". And there were options and packages available to each. Package A was GXL, Package B required Package A and included a CD Player with AE, Leather seats/trim, and the rear cargo cover. You could, however, request each individual option separately and not in a package. Which is why it makes buying a 91 such a shot in the dark. You never know what you are going to get.

You could say 91's are like a box of chocolate. <-- Did I just say that?

Sorry, I live in an S4 world. Wasn't 91 the year of the super-rare, uh, 91 GTUs? And I imagine there was a difference between base and luxury (brakes?) coupes?

Either way, goals and starting point are important considerations when looking for upgrades.

No. No GTUs in 91. GTUs's with a born date of '90 are rare... like 100 of them made or something.

Most '90 GTUS's were made in 89 along with the other 1000 or so.

You don't need it. The stock pump will support 200HP.

Apex'i Air intake System 199$
You can spend a LOT less money if you just buy a cone filter and make your own cold air intake.

Mazda Speed Short Shifter 399$
So you can shift m@d qwik yo!

2.5 inch exhaust manifold with Hi-flow Cat and 2.5 inch muffler (not sure on the price yet this is just on my mind)

You won't be making 200HP with a cat. You'll need a header and a free flowing catback.

What should I do for a clutch replacement or ECU replacement also?
There are many clutch options but the stocker is fine for street use.

The only ECU option is a full standalone which must be wired and tuned.

1989: GTU, GTUs, GXL, TII, Convertible
1990: GTU, GTUs, GXL, TII, Convertible
1991: Turbo, Convertible, A-Package, B-Package

You also wont be making 200HP on your stock engine. I reccomend you gut the car. Replace stuff with lighter stuff, IE, hood, windows, wheels, exhaust, make sure the exhaust is really free flowing. Get an MSD box, SAFC or a full stand alone, you'll reach better numbers with a stand alone. Or you can calculate how much all of this is going to cost, and save it up and buy a TurboII, put a good instake and exhaust setup on it and get 200-250 hp.
