Battery's weak, i think it's the alternator

well....i wanted to go to taco hell for lunch today and the car wouldn't crank. checked all of the fuses and everyone of them is intact. when i turn the key on to just accessory, everytihng seem fine (stereo on, beeping from the door opened with key in ign.), but when turned the key to ign. everything died. turned it off and back on accessory and was ok. when i turned on the headlights it died again. i just recently put in a 1000w amp with 2 12" subs and for 2 weeks everything was all fine and dandy (stock voltmeter read 13+ volts). but this morning it was barely over the 12volt line. i havent tried popping the clutch yet but i'm gonna wait til i get home. do you think the alt wasnt putting enought volts to charge the battery?

*edit* oh...after turning on the ign. the third time, i heard a low rumble behind the glove box.

Hmmn.....did it click or anything? Possibly just a bad ground connection....or a touch of corrosion could screw you as well.

12 Volts at the battery should be enough to crank the car, have you tried a jump yet?

Check your connections.....possibly just as simple as having a touch of corrosion between your clamps and the post. Mind did this a while back, cleaned it up worked great. A jump would work, because it's giving the juice directly to the cable...and more than likely a good roll start will work as well. When you get to a place you can check it though....I'd clean 'em up.

well..i'm finally home now. i tried to jump it but it didnt work. i did noticed the positive terminal was a lil corroded so i took my wire brush and cleaned it...still didnt work. then me and my 2 co-workers tried to roll start it, it tuned over but still didnt start. so i took the company's car to buy new terminals. went back and it STILL didnt start. so went back and got a new battery, put it in and it roared right up like it never happened. i guess it wasnt charging much so this weekend i'll be putting the fd alt just to be on the safe side.

Possibly the corrosion was getting in the way of the alternator charging that battery. Might charge that battery, and run it to orielys and have them run a test on it.

call around at auto part stores and ask if they have a charging system testing computer... I know some napas have little computer they can hook up and it tests your battery and charging system.... pretty easy way to check, no need to remove the alt. or anything.
