well it's looking like my coolant seal died (will know for sure sunday) so if thats the case im gonna spend the time while the motors out throughly cleaning up the engine bay...polishing various engine parts...regrounding etc...and was wondering about battery relocation...im planning on putting it in a battery box in the back and was just wondering what you guys have found to be the best way to run the power wire to the engine bay...inside the car, under the carpet and through the firewall? under the body? just looking for some suggestions...

and i dont need the comments about doing this just to be cool...with the new koyo radiator the space for the battery is rediculously tight and i'd just like to clean it all up...

I did my turbo's bat relocate and I ran the + wire to a big (135A) breaker then drilled through a factory grommet and ran the wire to the + wire to the starter then on to the underhood fuse box. I used insulated battery cable mounts drilled into the frame to hold both (+ and -) wires in.
I drilled through the body under the drivers side storage box on the - side, and attached the cable to a bolt going through the body, then attached another cable that went from the bottom of the bolt and went forward to a bellhousing bolt(alongside the + cable). This gave me a large battery cable that went clear to the engine block but also attached to the chassis as well. So far it works swell and I can use the breaker at the battery to shutoff power as an antitheft device.

My battery relocation in process. The billet holder fits great and give me enough room in the bin to mount the main circuit breaker, accesory fuse panel and fuel pump rewire fuse block.

i went ahead and bought the kit which cost 135 but had everything and included the brush aluminum box the ground you can put any where as long as you sand metal i rane the + throught the firewall by just cutting theexisting grommet a little to accomadate the cable and not let in water i really f... up by leting the cable rub on steering collum and shorting out then i fixed that ..so make sure you run the cable so it doesnt rub on nything, use a lot of zip ties and when tightening to starter hold the bolt while tightening the other nut.( i learned w/ 35 bucks and a ne3w solenoid) also i was thinking that if you were going to re locate to back n e ways just find one of the hole already kin the chasis w/ a plug. so instead of going through firewall just run it from start to the back. thats how i have it now that i had to move it from the storage bin farther back for the rear seats. hope that shed some light.-erik

After a search, I haven't seen a specific related question answered (although the one he asked has been...). Why does everyone relocate it to the storage bin. Is there a problem with relocating it to the back of the car? As in, where the spare tire would be.

Sorry, I don't know much about electrical stuff.

in the spare tire you would have to weld or design a shelf to put it on and would need to run one of those skinny bateries and se if it has enough crankin g volts.

My battery would fit there, and I'd actually prefer it there, but you'd have to design some sort of shelf as mentioned. The area narrows the deeper you go and at the very bottom it's too tight for a normal batter.

Besides fitament issues, would there any issues with safety. Such as in a rear end crash?

yea i dont think it'd take much at all the fab up a shelf to set your battery on...thats what i was thinking of doing...n put the battery in one of those boxes from summit...well probably one of the aluminum taylor ones, not the plastic...

i dont think it'd be any less safe than if u got in a front end wreck with your battery in the front...especially if your battery was boxed in the back

If the battery case was compromised, you still have a metal firewall and the glass windshield.

In you get rear ended and the battery case was compromised, do you REALLY want to get splashed with battery acid???

I think he's just just trying to get you to see options. Just on the fact that battery acid would and could come at you from the spare tire spot I would NOt do that and theres no way you could fit it in a box and also back there

No, I was playing devil's advocate.

If you had done a proper search, you would find my battery relocation write-up pretty quickly.

That Taylor "aluminum" box you mentioned...
What if battery acid happened to spill on the aluminum?
You can kiss the structural integrity good bye.
I use plastic, marine battery boxes in my installs.
Corrosion by battery acid is a lot smaller problem versus your mentioned aluminum box.

Relocated batteries are safe, and it's highly dependent on the install.
There is a right way and a wrong way to do this.

In fact, I have that Taylor box from Summit, but I swear it's thin gauge stainless steel.
I tell you this much...it won't keep acid from splashing outside of itself if there is a leak - the top and bottom is slip-fit.
Also, if the battery happened to explode, I doubt it'll stay intact either.
