Battery fizzing question...
The car: '87 TII...
Problem: Battery has been relocated to the driver's rear bin. Battery was smoking and fizzing and causing me to drift to zzz land while driving...
Solution (so I thought): Install a maintenance free battery... namely an Optima Red top. The battery was in the bottom half of a marine battery case that had holes butchered into it.
New Problem: My new red top still fizzes and makes noises. WHY? Condensation? Too hot for the bin?
Any help appreciated. Personally, I like the extra room in my engine bay and don't really want to locate it back there... but the noxious fumes and everything are driving me mad. I bought a new battery case... if you guys think it might be condensation or something... so um yeah... help?

The battery is being overcharged. Odds are the alternator is putting out way too high a voltage. Check it with a (real) voltmeter...Shouldn't be more then about 14.5V or so. Also, make sure the plug at the back of the alternator is connected. If it is not, the voltage regulator does funny things.

Get a new alternator to fix the over charge prob.
If the plug isn't in the back it likes to not charge at all.
Well if it is over charging than that fizzling is the creation of hydrogen and other acid vapors.
Which in the end == BAD!
Now the other problem. If you smelling vapors in the car then you didn't to the relocation right.
You need to get a battery bin which will have a vent tube to the outside! The bin should be air tight.
I also doubt it's getting too hot in there compared to the engine bay.

Where can I find a sealed bin... and how the heck do I make a vent tube?
