Banjo bolt removal

Banjo bolt removal
Trying to remove the upper hose from the oil cooler on a 88 coupe and couldnt get it to budge. I was able to get the lower hose off without any difficulty with just a large crescent. But i cant get the right grip or angle on the upper no matter how I shift things around. Is it best to use a flare nut wrench on these anyway? And what size what I need to purchase? Sorry if I have to don a flame suit.

Socket + extension + breaker bar out the top of the engine bay. Make sure you have some way to brace the cooler itself, since you can shear the mounts off. an impact gun would be even better.

i thought you meant the fuel rail banjo bolt by the thread title. i had trouble getting that retarded thing off too (on the engine side though). i ended up having 2 crescent wrenches, holding one while my friend stood in the engine bay and jumped on the other lol.
im sure theres a more elegant way to get it off though.

looking at your post again, are you saying theres not enough space for u to get a grip on it? do you have the radiator out?

lol, I'd be a liar If I said I hadnt used that combo before! Hey I got the $20 by the way. I'm going to send you some pics today too just to make sue you like what you're receiving.
NOW, about the hose. Once it hits the oil cooler it is attached by a banjo bolt with a big *** bolt end on it. The lower wasnt too tough but even with the radiator removed I couldnt get a good angle with enough leverage with the crescent to get it to loosen up. I had to degrease it a little too to make sure i wasnt just gripping sludge.

I think the socket was a 21mm, but don't quote me on it. During my years of 7 ownership I've acquired 21, 22, and 23 mm sockets each of a specific purpose on the car, I just get them mixed up as to what specific purpose each was for.

Damn, I had a 21mm hidden somewhere in the back of my garage but no 23mm. Guess it's one more trip to autozone. I have a gift certificate to sears that I've been itching to use on some tools, but I cant seem to pull the trigger. The sad thing is, is that I have an impact wrench and compressor but am hesitant about using my regular sockets on it, because I hear the impact can tear them up. BUT if I bought a 23mm if I used it just one time on the impact it would probably be alright wouldnt it?

It's 23MM.
A breaker bar works well but can rip the oil cooler mounts apart if used aggressively. An impact is a better choice though sometime clearance can prevent you from using it.
Remember that these bolds have a torque spec, so when you put them back on use new crush washers and follow the spec. If you tighten the bolts too much the cooler will crack.

I used a 15/16" socket,when I was in a pinch.As long as the socket isn't 12 point you are Ok..By the way I don't usually Recommend Standard Size on Metric Bolts/Nuts..but as I stated,I was Desperate!
