Ball Joint Question

Well as of last Wednesday I am officially an Rx-7 owner (88 GLX). Today I took the car to get inspected and it failed because the left lower ball joint is "bad." Later today I had two different people tell me the the shop I had the car inspected at is less than reputable. Anyway, my question is, how can I tell wether the ball joint is really bad aside from taking it to another shop? Also, how difficult is it to change the ball joint out for someone with limited experience with working on suspension and really cars in general? Thanks.

Air hammer and ball joint seperator 10mm IIRC or 12mm and 14mm IIRC for hte lower. Remove drop and replace. I just replace them I dont like my wheel falling off very much.

Check them 2 cro bars and try and pry the joint apart and see if there is any play. If play is present replace. Also a compromised boot is a keen indication of a failing one.
