Bad Turbo? **pics inside**

I think that the oil seals in my turbo are bad. I have oil in my intercooler, Coming out of my BOV, and in my TID. I wonder why there is oil in my TID though unless it is draning out of the inter cooler and pooling there.

Is my thinking correct?

My car only smokes on start up after about 5 seconds it stops smoking completly. Also it will only boost to 5 PSI that is with a stock intake with a K&N drop in filter, A 2.5in DP no cats to a HKS catback. i figured with those mods that i should be in the 7-8 PSI range no?

Also if i grab the propshaft of the turbo i can move it up and down but i would say less than a 32nd of and inch and it spins very freely.

so im not to sure what is wrong.

any help welcome thanks

I would try and clean all that crud up first!
There is enough "fresh" oil on there that would scare me.
Where is all that oil coming from (on the outside of the turbo)???

Whats strange though is that you said it only smokes for 5 seconds when you first start it up? With that much oil everywhere how the hell doesent it smoke like crazy whenever you drive it especially with the seals gone and all.

Yes - It's about worn out.
At this point, you could still probably rebuild it.
With any more wear the impellor hits the housing & it’s toast.

ya i noticed this too i first thought that it was coming from the BOV that vents to the atmosphere but it is clean as a whistle so im not totally sure how its all getting caked to the turbo itself

and ya it only smokes on start up them it stops for the amount of oil that was just sitting in the inlet you would think that i wouldnt be able to see behind me. but even when it smokes on start up it very thin it not like it billowing out of my pipes

EDIT: does BNR have a website that i can get more details about them then just trying to order it from jason at rx7store

^thats how they seem when they go, seen it on 300zx's all the time, the smoking is the first sign that the seals are going, then eventually you start having boosting problems, then noises as the shaft play gets so bad the wheels start to machine the housings. But at this point it looks like the comp. housing is still in good shape and you could get it rebuilt. Forced performance does good rebuilds.

Clean it up first and make sure your leak isn't also external. Loose fitting ect. That's alot of clean oil.
