Has anyone figured out whether this short shifter will work in our 2nd gens or not.
The original auction has ended but the guy has relisted it.
fc3sfreek why don`t you contact your friend and confirm that what he has is a Miata shorty and that it does work?
This would really be a good buy..........IF IT FITS!

I'm still worryed about the lack of a spacer. it can't possibly work without one, right??
the guy in the auction said "what you see is what yuo get", so I'm sure it doesn't include one.

when you use a "short throw" shifter, you need a spacer to raise the fulcrum point of the shifter. that's what makes it short throw. check out this pic of the Mazdatrix shifter:

see the fat ring, top right? that's the sapcer. one is not included in the ebay shifter we're looking at.
edit: looks like the Mazdatrix one actually has two spacers. the big fat one shown and also the smaller one immediately to the right of the shifter. anyway, you need to raise the fulcrum and that shifter on ebay doesn't have any means of doing so.

yeah maybe, but from whom? I dunno. you'd be stuck piecing together a kit, spending a little more money. not worth it in my opinion. I'd much rather buy a spankin new one (for FCs) for $150-200, or even a used one for $100 than experiment with the miata one.
sheet, man that miata shifter doesn't even include bolts! not to mention bushings, inner boot, gaskets... over $50 worth of extras that you really ought to replace if you're changing your shifter. You'd be up to $100 after buying those extra parts, and still without the spacers. maybe other sellers offer the miata unit with a more complete package, I dunno, but the mazdatrix comes with all that jazz for $200.
p.s. not trying to **** in the ebay seller's coffee here, I'm just saying what I would do if I were gonna buy a SS

I can dig it. I`m in the unique position of having just replaced the bushings and all three boots. I still would need to find the spacer though. Can`t blame a guy for trying to save some bucks though!

that inner boot though... can you get it off your current shifter without tearing it? or cutting the shifter apart? I remember that boot slips down over the top and is a *tight* fit when it pops over the bottom of the lever. you may not be able to reuse that part, even though it's brand new.
Is a short shift in our cars worth t for a daily driver stock gxl? I like to really hammer my car sometimes but I also like to cruise with my girlfriend and stuff. Does a true short throw make the shifting really sticky and harsh?
Also, should I replace my clutch to a better than oem one before going to a short throw? Just wondering.

i have the mazdatrix shifter in my car and yes when you shorten the shift throws it is going to get harder to shift (laws of physics) but its not really all that bad i actually found it easier to find gears after i installed the kit but then again my old one was so worn out that it woud pop out of gear all on its own. shortly after i installed the kit i ordered a heavyer shift ****. the one i have now is about the size of a pool ball and is made of solid steel so you can imagine the weight and i think it makes the shifts feel almost like stock. i love it
BTW: about the pic of the mazda trix kit there is a pic spaceer and the other part that was refered to a spacer also is actually a crush washer not and additional spacer

the instructions are in japanese and the slip bushing needs to be sanded down a tiny bit to fit in the shifter slot but it looks like it will work just fine after i modified it and installed everything. i will update this thread if i run into any problems with it and if anyone is interested in installing it and has any questions feel free to drop me a PM.
DO NOT look into buying the one previously mentioned in this thread, upon inspection and comparison that is a short shifter, not to be confused with a short throw shifter unless you simply want a shorter shifter...
also be weary of short throw shifters that do not use the nylon slip joint at the bottom, the fact that i had to take some material off of my bushing makes me believe a metal ball will not fit into the slot.
this FYI is only related to Miata 90-97 short throw shifter kits.
