Bad ground, leads to no tach?

i realized, after the fact, i had a ground loose that was banging around and i went for a drive, got on it, car sputtered a bit then tach went off, but the car was still running ok. and now since the ground is off, it won't start, it just makes a cracking/clicking sound until i fix the ground. any ideas?

car is an 88 turbo II

Not really. The Trail Coil is where the tach signal comes from. The trail coil and ignitor get a ground from the body of the coil assy being attached to the chassis by the three 10mm size nuts.

Where is this mysterious ground that you found undone?

Or do this. Pull one of the trail coil wires loose from the coil, but leave some of the wire inside the coil bore. Start the engine. Now slowly pull that wire from the bore. Do you hear crackling of the spark being made? IF you do, then the tach should be working.

the mysterious ground wire is under the EGR under the oil fiter. near something protruding from the motor that looks like a nipple with a little wire connected to it on the end of the nipple.

That sounds a little like the ground wire that connects to the oil pressure senders CONDENSER, which in turn is supposed to be bolted to the clutch slave cylinder. The condenser is blackand is rectangular in shape. It might be missing off your car. If it's that wire, then don't ground that wire directly to the chassis/engine or your oil pressure gauge will go sky high and peg out forever.

The condenser looks like this jpg: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...chmentid=80414

Is your tach still not working??? Did you try what I recommended? PUll one of the two wires out of the trail coil while the engine idles. If there is no spark, then the trail coil is not firing and therefore the tach will not work.

IF you have spark at the wire, then the tach should work. And no additional ground will help that.

The tach shares a common ground with several other items in the combination meter. Such as the voltage gauge. If the voltage gauge works then the tach isn't lacking a ground source, most likely not anyway.

I'd pull the combination meter plugs off and find the yellow/blue wire and ohm it out back to the trail coil assy to make sure the signal is getting to the tach.
