all oil gets filters before it enters the engine.

 

So in theory if there was anything in the oil cooler it would get trapped by the oil filter unless its too small (like tiny metal shavings)?

 

yes, or if the oil filter is full of debris already and is bypassing. but it would take alot of debris to plug up the filter.

Unfortunately I just had surgery done so I won't be able to work on my car for two weeks.

 

Careful when tightening that t-stat on the radiator. Overtorque it and you will end up needing a new rad... Been there and I wasn't even responsible for this, so don't complain about minor stuff. Be happy you don't have bigger problems to be consumed by.
