The fifth and sixth pictures in that link show the torrington bearing in place, and then having falled down. When it falls down, and then the bolt is tightened up on the front, the bearing gets crushed plus the endplay is not all screwed to heck and back.

In the depiction on this url, we've decided we'd call the torrington bearing, a thrust bearing. It is number....(2) on the list of the stack up. The bearing is a flat, washer looking bearing maybe 0.60 thick, and it sits on top of a spacer (number 3). If for some reason it falls off the Lip of the spacer, it'll fall down and rest on top of the eccentric shaft and be trapped b/t the spacer and the thrust plate (number 1).
Just love it when in one place we call Fred, Fred, but later on we call Fred, Lucy. A too common problem in tech pubs.
