Automatic starting issue

I'm thinking it's the neutral start switch. I adjusted both the switch and shift linkage but it still won't start.

Known:
The gauge cluster always reads "D"
Transmission will go from park to neutral to drive but won't register.
Can't pull out the key from the ignition in any other gear than neutral (which is correct)
No starter solenoid click but, the starter works. It started once in neutral before the cluster got stuck on "D"

Any ideas? Unfortunatly I don't know of any other autos in my car that I can take a look at to compare the switch movement.

your quess is right

It's slips over the shifter on transmission. Its got two splins on it that shear off causing the things you said. I found one, wtb on the parts site here.
