Automatic overdrive problems - any ideas?
Okay, before anyone does a ditz on the auto trani, I do plan on converting my 88 RX-7 to a manual, soon. Here's the problem - when in drive, and under 65 mph, the car is perfect, and shifts through every gear effortlessly, and into overdrive. Get the car warmed up and out on the highway and start doing anything over 65, and no overdrive. Basically, even going downhill, with no load, the car will not upshift into overdrive. So, I am stuck doing 85-90 in third gear at fairly high rpms. Now...get back off the highway and drop down to sub 55 mph speeds, and the darn thing starts shifting into overdrive again. Any suggestions as to what the heck is happening, and what I can start replacing or looking for? This is a pain in the butt.

Since your converting soon. Who cares!
Just kidding. Check fluid first.
If you want to waste money, replace the fluid and filter. Replace your vacuum diaphram. Test your kickdown, OD cancel, and OD control switches/solenoids. Also, your shift linkage could be a little screwy when speeding because of loose/broken mounts.
Download the auto trans FSM chapter and read.
