Autobox Identification ....

Hiya ,

I have a 1991 JDM TII Convertible with a broken autobox ( cant get reverse etc.. )

Now i know that you will all suggest that i do a manual conversion , but i really dont have the time / space / knowlege to do it , so i cheated and bought a 1989 TII Convertible ( but a manual ) that im now using as a weekend toy

Someone on the UK forum has a autobox for sale , so im thinking of getting it and trying to get the JDM one to work again

Thing is , we have no idea what year car its from , he got it with a job lot of spares .. so we dont know if its a S4 or S5

Is there a way to tell them apart ?? Im hoping that there are some obvious marks on the box ( like a tag or something ) or an electrical connector that would only be on the S5 .. we just dont know where to look and he lives about 200 miles from me ... so cant just bob over and have a look

Thanks in advance

There are a few differences between S4 and S5 automatics that I am aware of. This is based on the USDM cars, so I am unaware if it would carry over to UKDM ones. However, what I have noticed when digging through the Japanese parts catalogs is that the automatics are the same regardless of induction or location. A S4 GT-Limited will still have a N327 Flex Plate & Torque Converter and so on.

Crossmember: S4 is FB01, S5 is FC18 prefix
Transmission Bracket: S4 has 2 bolts, S5 has 4

Inhibitor Switch: S4 uses a SPST one (2 terminals), while the S5 has a rotary-type switch with more terminal (I believe 7). On the S4, it goes through a 4 pin square connector using 0.250" tabs, identical to the 4-pin S4 stereo connectors (Yazaki CN-A series IIRC).
