Auto Transmission/Head Light Problems......HELP!!!!
Ok first question is a toughy......but here goes! I have an auto (i do apologise about not having standard, but its my girlfriends) 1989 Rx-7 and for some odd reason we've noticed the transmission acting up lately. The car is having a hell of a time shifting from 1st to 2nd gear....after that she's smooth sailing. Almost feels like the gears are slipping, but other gears are fine, even when the car has the "hold" button, all gears work 100%. But for some odd reason without the "hold" button on, the car is revving really high before finally shifting into gear. Like I said, only happens within the first gear........once the car is moving everything is ok! Next question, out of the blue the pop up headlight on the passenger side is laggin a bit. Sometimes wont pop up automatically or go down, I have to go out and manually put a little bit of pressure to get it up or down....any suggestions? I could seriously use some help........her car is driving me nuts! Mind you it looks mint!

when was the tranny fluid replaced? If it is old ATF, then I would try that first.
As far as the headlight, the motor may be going or much more likely the linkage is damaged or in bad need of cleaning/lubing.

The tranny fluid has been replaced, asked everywhere, but no one seems to know the end result why its acting up. Fixed a couple things on it, but still the same problem. With the light not popping up, is it as simple as a little WD-40 around the joints to losen them up?

You will want to avoid using WD-40 on the car. WD-40 has solvents that are very hard on the plastic parts like the bushings for the head light motor rods or key locks.

i have an excellent Idea. if something is wrong with your tranny, and it needs to be rebuilt, you might as well do a 5speed swap, several forum memebers have done it, you can find info at www.rotaryressurection.com even if ur tranny needs to be rebuilt, you might as well do the swap anyways world of difference

I'm in the middle of the swap right now. BIG PITA. But I think it's worth it. I ran into the same problem with my automatic and it was the vacuum modulator. I went through all the major parts stores and they gave me the wrong one each time. Finally had to order one from the dealer for 90 bucks, but that fixed it for a couple of months. Tranny finally took a big **** and died on me. Ended up with no reverse, and only 1st and 2nd gear working. With the 7K redline you can get it up to 60 easy in 2nd, but not a good idea. Try the modulator or take it to a shop and have them pull the ecat codes to see if it might be a solenoid. Good luck.
