Auto to Manual?

K heres the situation.. I just got a CLEAN 86 Rx7 from the original owner but it is an automatic. I want to convert it to Manual and was curious how hard it is on a second gen, i have done this conversion on a first gen and it was a breeze. Just want to make sure that the second gen is the same or if different what do i need here is a list of stuff i needed for the first gen let me know if i need more

Pilot Bearing 'Installs fine no modification"
Aluminuim Flywheel "counterweight is bolted to flex plate so ill use the stock one"
Clutch
Transmission "obviously"
Master cylinder
Slave cylinder
Clutch Lines
Pedal Assembly
ECU "from a manual"
And the sub harness for the tranny "This was my question on the 1st gen it just unplugs form the main harness and the manual one plugs in to the main harness, is it the same on the second gen or do i have to replace the Whole harness?"

Any information would be greatly appreciated

Scott

The location of the auto tranny is further back than the manual. Therefore your going to need two steel bars to be welded to your manual crossmember and bolted to the positons where the auto tranny was. Yo its a pain in the ***, i did the conversion. If the wiring isnt done right your going to have mad lil problems with the car. holla

You dont need to change the ECU, same ****

as far as the nuetral switch i would bypass it so you dont need it. do you need to weld up stuff if you put in the manual crossmember?

heres what i did. peace of ****, my s5 gearbox came with a a mount. i unbolted the crossmember from the series 5 mount, got a hefty piece of steel, cut it to size, cut it to fit into the u shaped inside of the mount, welded it, then did the same for the old auto mound welded it to the inside of the u shaped piece on the inside of the auto mount , then i cut unother piece of metal and bolted it onto the exhaust mount on the back od trhe gear box and joined it to the auto mount, that sounds really hard to understand but i dont have a digital camera but i could draw a picture if sumone tells me how to post a pic, thats byfar the easyest and strongest way to mount a manual trans without cutting the manual trans tunel mount out. my way u dont have to bother and all the pressures are in the correct places. i dont agree with the welding of to pieces of metal to the mount cause they seem like they would act as big leavers and u would have a floppy **** mount

ya the pedal kit and master cylinder are bolt in. but you will have to remove your stiring collem first. its a tight fit.

also i agree with the two pices of steel being lever arms. im a engineering student so i calculated the bending moment on the proposed fix in the archives and the max weight each one can see with out beending if made of 1/4 in thick A36 steel (standard cheep low carbon steel) is about 80 lbs. before they will perminanly bend on you. i need to check that calc. to be certian so dont quote me on that number. but it seems about right.

im doing the conversion and i think im going to do the two pice steel and add gussets to them to keep them from flexing. but i would be interested in seeing a pic of your solution NZs4.

I'm currently doing an auto to manual conversion. And believe me it's a bitch of a job to do. But if you love your FC your gonna have to make a sacrifice. Here's a web site where I got some info about a tranny mount adapter http://www.rotaryresurrection.com. i'm using his example but I still cant give you any results because I have to change also the driveshaft, the differential and the half shafts. The whole powertrain basicly. Because i went from a non turbo auto to a turbo 5 spd conversion. So I have no choice but to go all out. I hope you wont have to go through the same thing as me. I'm slowly becoming broke *** from this project. But once this baby is completely setup, I cant wait till the day I put in all the oils, antifreeze, brake fluid and gas and turn the key for the first time. Good Luck Excess.

I'm doing this aswell. but I'm pulling the engine aswell which is giving me some more room to work on the clutch lines and all that jazz, so far the auto tranny was easy to pull. took about 4 hours, and about an hour or so was due to hard to reach bolts and ones that were stuck. dont know how hard my assembly is going to be though.

also you will need the manual driveshaft.
