Hi, Im new to the forums, just purchased a 1990 RX7 'Vert, and im very excited about it.

I was wondering what was the general opinion on the Apex'i N1 Dual exhaust system for the N/A RX7? Are they overly loud, overly raspy (civic-esque), built well, or any other available input on them would be greatly appreciated.

I ran a search, but couldnt quite find the answers I was looking for.

honestly some will say it sounds awesome and I will always claim it's ridiculously loud IF you have straight pipes ( header and midpipe).

there is no better sound than an open piped ROTARY. It's pure unadulterated sex for your ears.

 

Well, I plan on keeping the stock cats/header on the car, the ticket in CA for getting caught without them is reason enough, so basically just wanting the impression for the CAT-BACK Apex'i N1 Dual Exhaust w/ stock down pipe and header

And what does it mean to run "open piped"?

 

i've never heard the N1s on stock cats.

open piped means larger diameter piping Header/downpipe and midpipe, catless.

 

mine was not that loud with stock cats. (turbo II) but now with 3" down pipe, 3" mid pipe and a custom 3" flange welded on to the N1 cat back.....very, very, very loud!!!

 

It's all personal preference, to each his own, blah blah. I wouldn't bother listening to those who haven't used the system before, though.

I've used the exhaust on n/a and turbo charged FC's. I've also used custom, Racing Beat, Apex N1 single exit, Monza, GReddy PE, and HKS old school. The N1 dual system is still my personal preference for performance, looks, and sound. It is a tad noisy.

As for being built well...yea, they're very well built.

 

dont mean to jack the thread but..... i was thinkning about getting the N1 too, but i had a question:

when you order the dual N1s do you get them seperate? not welded together like the ones for the FDs,240s? i want some duals but i dont want two welded N1s.

My understanding is that the Apexi N1 Dual exhaust is as shown on Apexi's website, like the two tips on one side of the car. I thought it was like single N1 tips each on their own pipe on eac side of car but I have never seen real Apexi mufflers etup like that. Can anyone else verify??

 

ive seen Fcs that the owners have claimed that they were dual N1s.....did they buy two singles?

I've had the duals with all 3 cats before on a T2. The idle was as quiet as stock almost, and from inside the car is only a little noticeable at low rpms. It's loud once you give it more throttle. I'd recommended it if you like it.

and no, it's not welded. It comes with a Y pipe and two separate cans. Like the RB setup.

 

Apex makes dual N1's, so its not a hack job of combining 2 single N1's. As stated above, it works more or less like the stock catback where there is a y-pipe and 2 seperate mufflers. It also has smaller tips that the single N1 so you don't have that single huge-*** coffee can in the back, which is my only complaint about my single N1. And my N1 is very well built.

edit: does it mount to OEM exhaust hanger locations so the mufflers dont move around when you drive? If so, do they stay in place pretty good?

 

Yes, stock oem hangers, so it shouldn't move anymore than the stock system.
Mine are a little bit off center of the cutouts in the bumper because when they welded on the 3" flange it got shifted a little.

 

I can also make a little video so you can hear for yourself how loud it is.

I think mine are Apexi N1 mufflers. At least that's what the previous owner said. They look like N1s. Headers, no cats, and a glass pack or something. It looks like a bit of a hack job but it works. It's loud. I like being able to hear the exhaust, but I can't hear the cd player very well. Sometimes I think it sounds like a weed-eater . I also have a video that I can post later.

I'm interested to hear turbo80cid's car to see if it sounds like mine.

Those appear to be the "non-turbo" version of the N1 mufflers (or knock offs). The non-turbos were a smaller can and tip dia. than what was/is known as the Apexi N1 Turbo. Custom exhausts with N1 mufflers tend to sound really bad all the time. I used a custom setup with N1 Turbo's before, awful. Went to the real deal N1 dual and was much happier.

 

mine is a true Apexi N1 cat. back system....I paid something like $700 when it first came out. Here is a side view.....they are very large mufflers. I think it has a nice sounding idle and it sounds good at full throttle but just driving around gets a bit to loud.
