Apexi Intake/Filter

ok so several months ago i installed an Apexi Intake setup on my GTU. the filter is a dry type, not oiled like K&N, and says it is maintenance free. my question is, does anyone know how there can be a such thing as a maintenance free dry filter like that? i mean its a filter so it has to get dirty right? should i just wait until its dirty and wash it out or what? it's not a life threatening thing but it will agitate me if i don't know .
