your profile says you drive an 88 se. if you really want apexi, don't get a kit. just get the filter with a 70mm or 76mm opening(got mine for around $70) and an adapter. you can get the adapter off ebay or some people on this forum make them. here's where i got my stuff:

with a 91 you should get the kit because it's designed to fit the 89-91. and you wouldn't need an adapter because the kit comes with everything you need.
as for the power increase, it's hard to feel a 5 hp increase. but i did feel a difference when i finished my cold air setup. by the way, if you haven't freed up your exhaust yet, i would recommend doing that before getting an intake.

ok but I dont want to go through the trouble of waiting, plus, I'm creating my own intake setup (TUFOBALL 's kit actually, he's making about 5 of them) so it's not so important about the rest of the fittings.

FC3s.org did a pretty nice writeup of how to make yourself a custom intake heat shield. Click the link for the page

my car is an s4 with an s5 front end. i had to remove the brake ducts and foglights for this setup.
as for water issues, i've driven through puddles and in the rain with no ill effects so far.

You would have to go through a pretty huge puddle, and even if it did suck water in, it wouldn't hurt it. Rotaries can't hydrolock like normal piston engines can.

But for anything to hyrdolock, it takes a lot of water

Yup, still here

Whenever a filter is placed in that location, everyone screams Hydrolock - but to be honest, that wouldn't be my chief concern.
A filter element that is soaked in water is far less efficient than one that is dry. A wet filter element will negate any benefits of having a cold air setup in the first place.
