i'm thinking of just taking the mufflers out cause their clogged anyway. cause i'm gettin the 5th & 6th port headers with a straight pipe and i dont have that much money to spend on mufflers, so i was thinking of just taking them off and putting like 2 2 1/2 inch pipes in theirs place? that way i save a good $230 for mufflers, but i wanna know if its really loud all the time or when ur just in high rpm's. cause my bro has a 1st gen with headers and a 3 inch straight pipe and its loud when hauling *** but whenever crusin its muffled. he's got a muffler but it just looks hollow, so what do u guys think wouldnt the car run cooler as well?

 

I don't have any mufflers on my 86 currently. It is quieter than my first gen with header, pre silencer, and free flow muffler.
But, if you put a header on without mufflers LOOK OUT!
Mine without mufflers isn't too bad, but it doesn't sound throaty or high performance. It sounds like a car that needs new mufflers.
The cat does most of the sound muffling anyway.

It will be too loud.When I was changing an exhaust gasket on my y-pipe I drove up the road with just my header and pre-silencer and I don't know how to explain how loud it was.It sounded cool but hella loud.
