I was about to buy it (the 450) one but all the threads ive read either use or emphasis using a breaker or fuse block that the kit does not include. IS this kit safe?

No, it's not safe. You absolutely need a breaker or fuse (preferably breaker so that it can't leave you stranded should it blow) as close to the battery as possible when runing a long cable. I see SO MANY cars set up with just a big cable running from the battery to the engine bay, happily rubbing against the frame, scraping against the hard edge of the hole through the trunk floor, etc. And people wonder why they have electrical fires.

You can get the kit, but just buy a breaker seperately.

if I bought an audio kit with 2awg or 1awg with breakers and all that would that suffice? I just want to know if the cables from an audio kist would work I think they would but I just want to be sure. thanks

It depends on the breakers. You need at least a 150A breaker at the battery since the starter draws several hundred amps during cranking. It takes a 150A breaker about 10 seconds to pop under these conditions which is plenty of time to start the engine...and if it doesn't, the breaker popping will remind you not to kill the starter. Most of these auto kits are crap and have cheap fuse holders or poorly made breakers.

I buy most of my fuse panels and breakers from Bussman. Waytek Wire at http://www.waytekwire.com sells the Bussman breakers (and the same fuse panels I use) for decent prices.

Edit...But first check out local industrial electrical suppliers. Many industry processes are DC so they often carry the same breakers. Remember you can't use an A/C breaker on DC.

Thanks and yea i knew about the a/c and d/c thing.

But theres no breakers on that site over 50Amps. unless im search impaired.

I have the 150amp phoenix gold breakers. I was just wanting to know if the wire would matter. I didn't think it would.

I used that same breaker with 4 gauge wire and then put a 2nd gen fuse box(I have a GSLSE) so eveything connected good no loose wires I will taks some pics

i routed mine strategically. using rubber hosing and alot of free time. so my cable will not rub, move, or otherwise be harmed. So is there still a concern with a length of cable?

why wouldnt you want the added protection of the breaker?

Right now its not on the list of things to buy. i need a starter, balljoints, and to fix the alt alot sooner/

If you were careful, then you're probably safe. I have yet to see an OEM manufacturer use a breaker on the main battery connection. HOWEVER, if the cable ever does short or chafe, that $20 for the breaker will suddenly seem very cheap.

I'm impaired as well. If anyone wants to know, go to the Waytek site and then select "Circuit breakers" on the left. Now select "Hi Amp Breakers" on the right and then pick "150A surface mount".
