My air box is pretty beat up, so I'm undertaking a new intake as my next project. I was checking out eBay to see if there's any great deals there, but alot of these kits scare me because of their price. That, and I don't see any with the little piece for the air pump. Alot of these do have the MAF adaptor which is cool though.

Get a K&N cone ~$50

That would work much better. The filters in ebay are very poor quality and will allow dirt into the engine.

 

Sweet, didn't know Autozone would have something like that. Do you usually have to order them, or can you just pick one up?

they are universal but work on the FC, it says Mazda RX-7 in the back, although they misspell it

i have one from the seller "bestcarpart" he has a store, i think its just as good as a k&n, iver had both of them in my hand and compared them. And as for the restriction, the hole it goes into on the maf is square,

 

If I was broke I wouldn't hesitate to buy off E-bay. Sure it won't be top quality but for under $25 shipped it would work better than the stock box. It will let your engine breath easier. Some might argue that it will let your engine breath to well, letting dirt in.... *yawn*. I wouldn't worry about it.

Note that your airpump will need to be removed or have its own mini filter. I wonder what the effects of running it without a filter would be.... (not that I suggest that).

 

I recently installed an APEXi intake on my 89 GTU and it came with their top quality cone filter, the MAF adapter, 4 steel brackets that fit perfectly to the OEM air box bolt ons (you will have to brace the filter with something once you remove you air box or it will just bang around in the engine bay) and all the nuts and bolts you will need to properly install it. The APEXi kit even has a connection for the air pump hose behind the air filter so you don't need a second small fileter hanging in the engine bay. I got it from speedmachine.com It cost me around $100 including shipping but is well worth the money.

My recommendation, keep the OEM air box until you can get a quality replacement intake. Shortening the life of your engine or risking a rebuild for less than $100 isn't a very smart decision. Spend the money for a top of the line intake that will serve your engine with clean air and might even give you a few extra horses is a much smarter decision. Christmas is coming up, ask for a new APEXi intake from someone who loves you.

I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do yet, but I definatly want to run some plumbing down to the brake duct and fabricate a nice cold air box there.

 

I'm using it, but not with that cheap filter you get. You can buy the one of ebay for $10 and go buy a K&N filter for $30, or you can buy the K&N kit, which is the same thing but you pay $120 for the oval filter pretty much.

or you can put filter oil on the filter, but only a tiny bit so it would be more effective like the K+N but the K+Ns have been known to have too much oil and cause IAT senssor and MAF sensor problems on various vehicles but i don't think the FC is one of them.

 

Good ol' S5 intake, no MAF adapater needed.

 

 

Thanks for all the input guys. I planned everything out and here's what I'm gonna do.

I grabbed one of those 92-96 Prelude intake kits, and managed to get the air pump filter from Autozone, but they had no clue about the MAF adaptor. I even made them look it up and they couldn't find anything, so I'm just gonna troll around on eBay and what-not to pick up a cheap one and go from there.

I'm also picking up some weather seal, some flashing material, and some PVC tubing to turn my brake duct into a cold air inlet. The duct is messed up near the wheel anyways, so I might as well make some use of it.

My only concern is with relocating the washer fluid resevoir. What have you intake-savvy guys done about this little situation (like where did you put it, and what suggestions would you have for an intake n00b?).

The final question relates to sucking up water into that area. With the setup in mind, is that something I really need to worry about? I figure that I shouldn't actually worry about getting air sucked in there, because there shouldn't be any vacuum unless I really manage to seal it crazy tight, and any rain water, etc should be in such a small quantity I shouldn't be worrying. that, and you can't hydrolock a rotary, correct? I can always make a cheezy plug to stick in there if necessary I suppose.

Oh yeah, I want to weld the flashing together to make something nice and professional, but haven't really welded before. My father was telling me I can just get one of the MAP gas hand held deals that you normally use for soldering copper (I guess the MAF is hotter and made for small welding) and use that to do it. What else do I need? From the little welding I've seen done in person, it looks to be just like soldering electronics, but no a larger scale, right?

 

I have the same one and a friend has the Apex'i one and neither one of us can tell a noticable difference except that after having them the same length of time mine had caught more dirt than his did so to whoever said the ebay ones would let more in there is some proof against it.

 

Holy crap, I love you. I've been looking for MAF adaptors for a good price, and he had them for $4.50

I put the mini filter on the air pump today, must've added +10hp, and it makes all the other guys jealous because it's so sleek. :P

 

I have one of the bomz filters from the bestcarpart guy from ebay on my GSL-SE (it's the same adapter as S4s) and a real K&N on my 91. The K&N is MUCH better, I can barely tell that the cheaper one is sucking in any air. However, the adapter it comes with gets the job done, and my cheap *** will keep it on until I get around to picking up another K&N.
