Lightbulb Anyone thought about moving the alternator?

While I was searching through some old posts looking for info on those Meziere water pumps, I came across an interesting post. The guy mentioned moving the alternator to where the AC used to be. At first I thought; this is alot of work for nothing. But after thinking about it for a while, I think I understand his logic. A lower center of gravity will always help a cars handling. And the alternator is a heavy *** son of a bitch. If you could move it to where the AC was, assuming you removed the AC, it would move a large chunk of weight from the very top of the motor to a much lower position. The bracket would not be to difficult since there are nice flat threaded holes already in the block.

Has anyone done this yet? It seems like a good idea to me; what are your thoughts on it.

IF you were into road racing I would understand moving it. But ya yesterday when i was tearing down my engine I was thinking about how heavy the alternator was and how high up it is.

it was scathcart. but he did it so he could use a bigger 200amp alternator with different mounting brackets. since nobody makes a big one to fit up top. I highly doubt you would notice any diff in handling...

Mine is put down on the exhaust side of the engine just below the water pump. I only did this because I couldnt put it up top and the ac compressor side is were my muffler is. Works okay, had do have mounts made at a machine shop. Looks clean though.
