I had 217,5xx on mine when I rebuilt it. It didn't need rebuilt, but I had no idea of the history of the car, and I had to take the engine out to paint anyway...

WOW! 400k !? First off: You would think that after 400k miles you would be so attached to the car that you would never want to sell it. Second: Who would buy a car with 400k miles on it? Did he sell it for like $50 ?

I think it's time I look at getting an SA.

My uncle went through cars the way Bond went through women. He has owned 57 Chevies, Ford Galaxies or whatever, 2 Corvettes, 3 Trans Ams, 2 Camaros, 1 Firebird, then in 1978 he heard about the Wankel powered RX-7s. He went to the dealership JUST to check it out. The salesman saw him eyeing it and asked him if he wanted a ride and to take it for a spin. My uncle said sure. They got in the car, the salesman had let air out of the car prior to my uncle being there so that the tires were a slightly lower pressure. He pulls out of the lot, revved it to 4.5 and as my uncle described it he was THROWN into his seat back. The tires didn't stop spinning till half way through second. The salesman floored it all the way through the residing area, he asked my uncle if he wanted a drive. My uncle still only having come to LOOK at the car, gets in the drivers seat.

He floors it and he said he never felt so good in his life. The sunroof was open, the windows were down, it was summer time, and at his feet was 1.2 liters of pure unadulterated power. He whipped it around for a little while and then returned to the lot. He turned to the sales rep and said, "You son of a bitch." "You just sold me this damn car." He went in to sign the paperwork and it turns out while he was taking the test drive, someone had bought the car he had ridden in! The last one off the lot. So he had to wait a further month to get to ride in his car. When it arrived his only complaint was that it didn't have a sunroof but otherwise he said it was perfect, a dream. The man has so many stories about this car but his favorite was one about going down the Merrit Pkwy, at 2 in the morning on his way to Greenwich Ct.
Some guy in a Porsche kept baiting him to race, pulling up next to him and then flooring it and passing him again and again. So finally he got sick of it and decided to give it a run for it's money. He put his foot down and WOT'ed it down the Merrit. As the story goes the Porsche caught up at EVERY straight, but just was sluggish around the turns (my uncle expected due to an inexperienced yuppy driver that was squeamish about turns) So the Porsche keeps catching up at every straight and the last stretch with a turn before my uncles exit, my uncle is screaming down the hill. (the merrit pkwy is a very windy and hilly highway for those who don't live in NY NJ CT.) His last turn is coming up he gets out left and swings hard in right and punches it. Zips out of the last curve at 110 on the speedo, the Porsche behind him comes in at about the same speed swings left begins to swing his hard right, and as he is in the turn loses faith in his car and lays on the brakes to slow it down. Bye, bye Porsche, he ate the guardrail at somewhere aroung 85 mph my uncle estimated. All he saw in his rearview mirror was headlights, illumination from brakelights, and then SPARKS lots and LOTS of sparks, as the Porsche coasted around the entire curve along the rail. He pulled into the next gas station, said "Someone just bought it on the curve up there." told the gas station owner where the accident was, called 911 and drove off.

He had tons of stories with that car and loved it. He sold it because he got married and was having kids. He was however one of the first back then to get the full backside reflector the ones that usually said "RX-7" except his said " Breezin' " After he sold it he went back to buy it from the guy whom had purchased it from himself 2 or 3 years back. The man said that he was sorry as he had just sold it to someone else, the mileage was now 45X,XXX and the motor was still pulling hard. Pretty crazy stuff. Oh well, time to stop boring you. Have a good one guys!! and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!! bwahahaha.

someone on fc3s.org had almost 400,000 miles on his NA before it overheated. Would have gone longer too if he hadn't have used dexcool.

Someone on this forum has 180,000 miles on a TII engine.

Just to be a jerk. I've got 72,000 on my original NA motor. I've got at least 10 years left on this thing.

My 86' Base had a rebuild at around 176k. I don't know if it blew up or what (it was before I had it).

I've got almost 160,000 on an 88 TII and she's still running strong (knock on wood). Not running stock boost pressures either

Baby's original engine ran to 218,000 before blowing a internal oil seal. Even with a humongus ammount of oil bypasing into the #1 rotor she still idled smooth. Ran pretty well too even with the 5&6 ports not actuating (found this out when I got the old motor out)

I bought mine at 125k like yours a 88 SE and it ran until 160k. Granted, I didn't treat it the best but it ran like a champ until then. Now I'm 35k on the rebuild and it is ridiculously awesome.

I'm at 213,000 km's on my 87TII, still running pretty good, not as much power as it used to have, and it does have the hot start issue (not my injectors) but its still boosting really well!, also on stock boost, i dont dare to turn it up till i have a new engine.

can i ask a dumb question that has been asked a billion times....how long in general will a rebuilt motor last? considering i will now be taking care of the car, with routine oil/spark plug changes...?

Yeah, that 436,000+ mile FC guy is on all the forums isn't he? As for the guy who asked, "who would buy a 400,000+ mile car?", you'd be surprised how long the line is, and how high the bidding went.

mine had 215086 on the dial when I bought it. Blown coolant seal and a few apex seal springs were no longer doing their job. That's amazing that some of these engines are lasting so long. I doubt many cylinder'ed engines with this small of displacement would last near as long or as well as some rotaries seem to.
