Anyone put a small sub inside the spare tire?

I have been thinking how to add some Hz to my stereo while keeping the stock apperance and everything low key..

It looks like there might be enough space to put a small sub in the hole inside the spare tire.. Anyone try this?

If you don't have a back seat or storage bins you can use the area under the false floor.

Keeping the sub and making a little round enclosure to fit inside it isnt the greatest idea. You'll spend way too much money on a speaker that will sound better than the restroom of a taco bell for the volume of air you'll get with that type of box.

If you took a little more energy you might be able to seal in an enclosure using the spare tire area without making a complete box. It wouldn't be infinite baffle because you have a set amount of air. Probably close to 2 cubic feet which is more than enough for a sub to work with. Getting to your spare would be a bitch at that point, but how often do you really use it? Just keep a screwdriver in the car to remove the baffle board with.

Another option would be to make the most boring box you can and dress it up to look like a cardboard box. Hidden in plain sight....

I've don't have a backseat but I do have the bins..

the Kicker solobaric L5 only requires .33 cu feet on it's specs...

Hmm I will pull apart the bins and take a look at them.. I wonder how much space is "extra" in there..

Okay nevermind.. I went out and measured the space in the tire and no way.. it's too small.. plus there isn't any extra space under the bins and I am not willing to get rid of one of them.

Oh well I will be bass less it's cool

Each side of the bin is about 1cu ft of useable space.

I am a firm believer that unless you have some reason to use multiple speakers... DON'T!

I have dual 8" drivers in each of my main home speakers because they blend the tweeter into oblivion and are smooooooth. I had 4 8" drivers in my jeep because 4 Boston pro 8's gold magnets in a row look **** under plexi. (and I needed the most sound out of 12" square I could get so the 8's in a row worked really well)

In our cars you would be much better off using the best driver you can afford, (meaning get one thats better than the two shitty ones you were gonna get) and a really good amp to push it. Multiple drivers aren't needed unless you're doing something funky with them or you cant get a single driver to do the same job.

A second woofer will still only produce a 3db increase over a single. Spend your money on a bigger/better amp to drive the one to its limits instead.

I'm thinking of mounting one of these in the back corner. Seems like it would be low key and easy to disguise with a carpeted frame to cover it.

Anyone tried them. Are they pieces of crap? You can mount them horizontal or vertical.

NOT TRUE!! I have a 10" sub in my spare tire. It is possible.

I'll try to find some pics. Posted them a while ago.

Finally someone who appreciates balance over mass volumes of air being pushed around.

The point of a hi fi stereo is to blend all the frequencies seamlessly, without any of them standing out. These guys who slot 2 12's and a huge amp think they have the best stereo, but nothing could be farther from the truth. The bass is distorted, and overbearing.

The cleanest set up is some component types and a well designed enclosure with some modest drivers. It's not like anyone plays pipe organ music and needs bass down to 20Hz.

Forget it. If you're not willing to have your subs in plain sight, it's not worth it. Trying to hide any major subs in the rear is going to be a huge bitch, and alot of money. Get kick panels! I have a pair made of glass, custom molded, and they house a 5.25" mid and a tweeter and the mids hit HARD. JL components are phenominal. I have my kicks carpeted so they blend EXTREMELY well. You wouldn't notice them unless you looked closely. The only problem is that on the driver side, the kick is barely small enough that my clutch pedal just misses it when compressed. But if I have my shoes on, the outside of my foot clips the kick, so I have to drive without my shoe on my left foot. But I'm all about SQ... So, if you're all about the boom, it might not be for you. In the future, I'm going all out with a glass setup under the hatch and I'm going to use four JL 8's aiming back at the glass and getting a horned effect, and blend it with my crossovers.. It'll be yummy, but also seen from miles away. I don't mind though. I want the show. The cost of my custom kicks were 300 for the pair, not including the component set by the way.

Oh, my home towers will play loud alright though. I designed them from scratch to play down to 25hz and up to 20K. They measure and sound better than a buddies 3K a pair Audiophysic speakers. (a/b/x tested with multiple trained and novice listeners) Hell, my buddy was pissed that I showed him up for 600 in parts. lol MTM is the way to go to get a beautifully balanced soundstage and imaging. The dual 8's also move plenty of air to get the spl up there when I want to jam out. (the difference being mine is perfectly clear at 120db)

For all of you trying for perfect RTA scores in the 7... Give up! You need dual 30 band eq's to get close and you don't have enough cabin space to hear a 25hz note let alone a 20. (you need to be able to recreate 1/4 wavelength in order to hear a sound. 20hz requires 18 feet)

Thaniels design could be implemented to keep the spare as long as the baffle wasn't permanantly attached to the car. If you were able to unscrew it and remove the buildout you could still keep your spare under it.

Oh, and my home towers are 2.6 cu/ft internal volume each.

I've hit a perfect "40" in RTA in my 2nd gen before! Years ago when I was an installer and competing in IASCA and USAC. Of course I had dual 30 band eq's. I have 6 1/2" Image Dynamics mounted in the floor in front of the pedals and where the computer used to be. Enclosures are .3 cu ft. each. They are carpeted over and with custom floormats you don't see anything. I used to have Image Dynamics CD-1 pro mini horns mounted in the top of the dash under the windshield but later removed them when the car became an engine project. The back left corner behind the strut tower held a Velodyne 12" sub. There was alot of custom work to be done in this part of the car since alot of stuff had to be cut/relocated/removed. The box was fiberglass and was a little over 1 cu ft. I used an Orion DEQ-30 digital eq running through a McIntosh Mc440 amp. That setup sounded awesome! I regret pulling it out but I still have a few things left over.

On an earlier system I had built up the area in the back by 5". This had 3 Orion amps and 2-JL 15W6 subs whee the storage bins are. That car ws just plain LOUD! After about a month of it I got sick of it though. Somone else wanted the system more than me though and took it out by way of through the back hatch glass. Oh well...just rambling here.

Thankyou! I spent a bit of time getting it to fit.

I too didn't want to be without the spare. Never needed it in 9 years but the day I take it out.... I have 6 screws holding the board to the rx-7's structure and keep a screwdriver in the car to remove them if I ever have a flat.

The sub is a 10" free air sub mounted to the board which you can see in the pics. It is not a box just a board. The factory carpet can't quite cover it all but it is really close. No one would even guess there is a sub behind the carpet =)

Sounds VERY good. After hearing it my wife said "I want one." Installed a similar set up in her car a couple weeks later

Does anyone know how much volume of air there is in the spare tire well? I am about to tackle a box project there.

I just wouldn't put that nice of a system in my rx-7. I would drop some nice components in there, but thats the extent. You have to put the nice system in the daily driver/commuter car. That way you feel better when you are not driving the rex.
