Anyone mounted square displays into the gauge cluster?

Well i'm gonna see if I can mount my TE display into my '89 GTU's gauge cluster's plastic lens. I wanted to tape off an area and cut it out so that it could be in-set to the lens. I don't know if it will look well though. Wankel7 has his TE display mounted on the gauge cluster/instrument bezel which is my second choice for mounting it.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

The dimensions are approx. 3.25"x2.125"x1.125"

Yeah that's actually a cool idea. But I think i'll try the gauge cluster idea first as it would put it close to my view.

Well I'm going to try and cut one of my spare lenses to fit the display, now that it works!

Has anyone ever cut the lense? Is it easy to crack it or will it take the beating of a dremel?

Even very brittle plastic should cut OK with a dremel if you go slow enough.

Be sure to tell us how it turns out.

Sell it and buy the LA1. Did you ever get that thing working properly?

Holy blast from the past! Looks like a mid 50's interior meets 2040?

I still say this is the best bet:

The outside of the car isn't bad.. I love the front end and the rear wide fenders.. but the side skirts suck and the interior.... MY GOD.. red crushed velvet and Plaid Fllor mats... YEEESH...

Personally, I would not cut the plastic unless you had a spare one!!!!!

Apparently.. RE has made his own dash up.. Which I've thought about doing since the boost gauge is non-operative cause of the haltech, and I have mechanical gauges for everything else.... Just don't know how to go about keeping the car legal because I'm on the PA 5K exemption, and removing the Odometer would rellay screw that up!!!!

I would use double sided tape and mount it to the surface of the plexi-glass rather than cut it, the rounte the cable down through the gap between the steering wheel cover.

Mine was mounted dead center, that way I can still see everything, it gets tough to see the tach needle at idle and deep into redline, but other than that it seems to be fine. Though, I removed it and installed the LA1

If you pull the gauge cluster out you will find that its very easy to remove/swap the plastic lense. Anyway, if you take it out it is very easy to cut with a dremel. It cut cleanly and didn't crack at all for me. I mounted my HKS boost gauge in the corner of the lense since my stock gauge stopped working. However, I do recommend having a spare lense to practice on. My first attempt at it was heinous. I'll try to find a picture...

I think i've hit a major snag in the project as from what I can tell the cluster has what looks like a little ramp for the in-built lighting right where I wanted to put the LD02. So If I were to sit it on the surface it would be angeled towards the floor or the car. I think I might have to resort to wankel7's placement, or yours.

I think the LD02 DIY was like 60 bucks or so USD.

Anyhow i've given up on the idea as I don't want to mess with the cluster lighting so i'm just going to mount it in the position james has or in the position james has, hehe follow......
