I'm going to get a big socket and have the end cut off so I can then pipe wrench that big *** nut off the output shaft because I can't find the right tool for the job.
As those big sockets are pricey and I can't test for fit before cutting, I'm hoping someone might know.
I've measured it with calipers and it's either 65 or 66 mm.

Unless you have an impact gun, I'd buy one of the E-Shaft Nut tools. Mazdatrix has the Mazda tool, and there are several aftermarket tools out there.
These are much better. They use the ring gear to turn the nut off. You don't have to anchor the shaft or anyting.
The mazdatrix tool is like 3' long, and you still have to bust a nut turning it. So if you use anything else, make sure you have at least that much leverage.

[B]if you're like me and do things dodgey... just get a nice big hammer and chisel. comes off if you bang it hard enough. pic:
I'd thought about that. But, since the nut would be spinning at high rpms and the chisel could take bits off or scar it such that it would become unbalanced, that I'd pass on that option. I dont' want to possibly introduce any vibrations into the tranny.

success! I realized that I was going to have a lot of troube finding a 65 mm socket. I'd then have to have it cut so it would fit on the main shaft.
$9 pipe wrench and some creative immobilization of the main case and it came right off. Almost no scratching to boot.
Now I just need to figure out how to get those taper cotters out of there.

what does the dynamic dampener do anyway? I am looking to temporarily swap an s4 tranny into my s5 and noticed that the s4 tranny does not have this. Will I be okay using the core of a S4 tranny w/ the back end (shifter rod housing part) of a s5 tranny until i rebuild my s5 core???
