Anyone know this car? 1988 "GTUs" in Kansas

Hey all. I just found this car in my continuing search for a S4 base model to race in CSP. It's badged as a GTUs. it's being presented as a GTUs. When I ran AutoCheck on the VIN it came up as an '88. It seems to be made from a mix of S4 and S5 bits.

The owner is a guy in high school, who doesn't seem to know much about the car. He wants to sell it and buy an Eclipse.

If I'm going to buy it, I'll probably have to make it happen this weekend. I talked with one of my more knowledgeable rotard friends, and he suggested someone here might know the car. Any input is appreciated.

s5 engine and tails and shifter but the rest is all S4, looks like a chop shop car.. if it did come back as an 88 then it probably is correct, as it has the lack of sunroof and OMP and has 4 pot brakes. it should also have a clutch type LSD.

i like his stereo surround and drift pedals!

just kidding..

yah its not a gtus. it was made to look like one as they are more rare and sometimes bring in a pretty penny.

Could be an '88 GTU with those seats, no sunroof and 4-pots.
Good starting point. The clutch LSD is the one you want.

Hmm. I kinda thought it was a fake. I had heard rumors of an elusive 88 GTUs, but was skeptical. The only real bummer about that is that there is likely no 4.3 diff or low 5th gear. Still, as a modded base it might make a good CSP car if the kid will go low enough on the price...

You wouldn't want a GTUs for CSP anyway. Better to start with the earliest car you can find.

I am thinking a S4 chassis might be better. I am planning kind of a low offer due to this body damage, non-functional pup-ups and some of the half-*** looking mods. We'll see if he bites.

Why?

Just take all the mousetrap belt stuff out and a few other heavy non essentials and you have the same weight car with a better motor.

Because a GTUs costs more for the initial investment and you're paying for stuff you're going to throw away (such as the diff) anyhow. Unless of course you can't find another hardtop FC or you get a tremendous deal on the GTUs.

Considering how well the last car worked out with a GXL as a starting point, I can't help but think how much better a base model buildup could be. Especially with a little more cash to throw at it.
BTW, good to see you, 1Sweet7, and Colorado frickin' rocks!

Crap! Well, I talked to the kid and made him an offer commensurate with a molested Base model. He said he will just keep the car. Back to the drawing board. Thanks for your input everyone.
