Anyone have an engine vibration @5k

I was running a GTi the other night and I noticed an engine vibration starting around 5k and getting worse around 5.5k and the disappearing at 6k. Smooth running after that. Has anyone felt this before? Oh, I killed the GTi.

I used to have a slight vibration in the lower rpms, turned out to be engine mounts. I'd check your engine and trans mounts to make sure everything is nice and tight.

I would check the wheel balance first. It is the easiest. then mounts, then U-joints(rear first)

After you find out a drive line is $250 rebuilt you'll be looking to buy U-joints. The guys at Rockford are really nice and helpful for $50.

Wheel balance? Not sure what you're refering to there, and our U-joins are not changeable. You will need to buy a new driveshaft if thats the case, which it isn't because its not load or speed dependant...just RPMS. I would say engine mounts as well.

Check all the mounts Motor, Tranny and Diff. Even a crack can cause a vibration. I've been through about 2 sets of motor mounts until I got my hardened ones from Rx7.com

Overdriven.....Joe....

If you loose one of those little weights off of your wheel, you gonna get a shimmy or a vibration that will come and go a different speeds. Don't take my word for it, go out and mark on your wheel where one of the weights are, pull off that weight and go take a spin. After you see the results put the weight back on your wheel where you made the mark. I'll wait patiently for your apology

No, the u-joints on a RX7 are not replaceable.........not as far as Mazda is concerned. They want you to buy a driveshaft for 300+. The correct size replacement u-joint is found at Rockford. You have to Drimel the welds on your stock shaft u-joint to remove the old u-joints. You then clean out the groove and put the Rockford joints in similar to the "Normal" way of doing things. Takes about two hours after you get the shat out. Oh by the way the Rockford U-joints are $52 shipped from Rockford to Cali.

That is why I originally told rotorhead to bookmark Rockford....... Had you taken time to look with your own eyes and learn something new I would not have had to spend my precious time typing this. Again I'll wait patiently for an apology

I had the same problem right around 5k rpm's when fully warm. Does it also shake when you rev it in neutral?

Mine did, and when I pulled my motor for the rebuild I found a broken motor mount...

Who's got hardened motor mounts? I believe it is probably a mount.

I'm still not sure why you mentioned the wheel balance though. My point is that he said he has ENGINE vibration...not wheel vibration. And besides...he said that it is RPM dependant...a wheel balance issue is only speed dependant of course. Same goes for the driveshaft. That would be speed and load dependant, not RPM dependant. Either way, I do apologize if I came off rough sounding to you.

Joe,

Thanks, I understand.

Not knowing the abilities or experiences of the original poster, I would first check the easy things.

Wheels first....Could be he was running in 4th gear and just so happened that he had the vibration at whatever speed that RPM equates to. maybe it was a back wheel that didn't feel like it was coming from the back and he misdiagnosed it for an engine vibration. When he slowed down the vibration went away. He was looking at the Tach and assumed it was engine related. Eriksseven pulled his motor only to find a broken mount. In his case He went for the hardest cure first and it turned out to be a mount that could've been changed in an hour or two. Lets look at the easy things first.

Then I said Mounts. Meaning motor and Tranny. I didn't mention any cure for the mounts because you can find replacments for them anywhere. A big prybar will tell you if one is bad or broken.

Then I suggested U-joints, I did say where to fine them because most 7 owners aren't aware of the drive shaft problem until they get a shimmy. When all the signs point toward the drive shaft and they get quoted $300 they will wish they had heard of Rockford. I searched far and wide for a cure for the drive shaft thing. The only economical cure is Rockford. And the guys at Rockford are real nice and helpful.

That's all I meant

I had the same problem on a 91 vert I picked up at an auction. Turned out to have been caused by leading/lagging spark plugs being reversed.
