Anyone ever towed with an FC?
Anyone ever towed with an FC?
Just curious if anyone has ever hooked up a trailer to their FC. What have you towed? How well did it work? Where did you get your hitch from?
Thanks

yes, and the stock/old rear shocks/springs were already blown out. The rear sagged quite a bit. I made the hitch myself with the help of my african friend. I bought a 2" recivef from walmart and got a heavy peice of L beam. I just welded the 2 rear tow hooks together with the l beam, then bolted the hitch onto that. I think i made a thread about it on here a few years ago. You might can search my threads and find it, or i can post a pic when i get to my computer. Just know that if you put more than about 100lbs on the tounge it's going to start sagging unless you get stiffer springs. If i had to tow a car i would prefer to use a dolley or even a tow bar to keep the tounge weight down. Also make sure you're brakes/tires are good. also if you have wide/summer tires on the rear you may have trouble pulling even a light boat/ jetski up a slick/ wet boatramp.
I tow a light trailer for track excursions.
I don't think I get more than 70lbs of tongue weight, since when loaded i can easily pick it up and move it around. When driving, I can barely feel it's there. It is modded a bit since I was never going to tow the 1500lb load capacity of the trailer as purchased (used), so I took out all but one leaf, and flipped the axle to lower it.
In addition to being an easy tow, I only noticed about a 1mpg loss at 65 mph.
The hitch I made is similar to the one described above, based on the way the Curtis-brand one attaches.

I have the Curtis brand hitch for a small tire trailer. It requires drilling into the spare tire well and blocking the rear towing brackets. The only thing I notice is that the boost kicks in 500-1000 rpm earlier when towing
No problems with this set-up

V8 FC + Curt Hitch + Harbor Freight Utility Trailer (4'x8' cut down to 4'x6')
Went from 29mpg to 26mpg on the highway with 18 tires(12 wheels) in tow.

Back in 99 when I first started getting into rx7s as a means to make money, I would take a friend and a chain, and we'd head off in my 89 GTU to go look at cheap FC's advertised in the classifieds as beat up or non running for various reasons. I'd negotiate and make a deal, get the title, hook the chain between the two rx7s, put my buddy in my car and I'd get in the crappy car to steer and brake, and off we'd go.
Sometimes the car in question was just badly flooded and I'd pop the clutch and ride 2nd gear for a while, and then the engine would spring to life, so I'd radio ahead to my buddy to stop and unhook the chain for me, and I'd drive the car the rest of the way home.
Other times we'd tow a car 10 or 20 miles this way. Of course, there was no load put on the suspension of the tow car, so there was no problem. It did require two coordinated and experienced individuals to do it semi-safely, though.
Used to get some damn funny looks too.
A few months later I got hooked up with this guy from NC who I was having build engines for me at the time, and I'd haul a car load of engine core blocks over to the raleigh area and back once a month. My record was 6 rotary engine blocks (approx 1200lb) in an FC, through the curvy and hilly mountain pass between TN and NC. Three in the passenger floorboard with the seat removed, three in the hatch. That was a beater car and the interior was already trashed, so I didn't give a **** either way.
In 2008 the engine in my truck spun a cam bearing so I sourced a replacement. I borrowed a utility trailer and drove two hours to pick up the replacement V8 engine for my truck, and hauled it home with my FC.
Before I could get my truck up and running again, my father in law's maxima killed the alternator and left him stranded, and who should he call but me. So I hook up the tow dolly to the FC and drive about 30 miles, load his maxima on the dolly, and tow it home to work on it. The front nose of the maxima on the dolly stuck up above the roof of my lowered FC.
Not directly related, but later a friend of mine had a lifted x-cab ford pickup truck that needed an engine swap and he talked me into letting him do it at my place and use my tools. But he had no way to get it here and couldn't scam AAA into bringing it for him, so he talked me into coming to get it for him. So I show up in my 3/5 lowered denali with about a 9000lb tow rating, and a light duty flatbed car trailer. Well come to find out the truck is a huge diesel F250 that weighed 8500+lb, AND it had the replacement diesel in the back of the bed, weighing another 1000lb. The truck was so long that the wheelbase barely fit on my trailer, with the front and back end hanging over. My trailer weighs 1600lb so I was towing about 11000lb with my lowered denali. Luckily I just had to tow it about 30 miles across town. Starting and stopping were not really a problem, but straight line stability was, because of all the weight hanging off the back of my trailer making it sway.

i've pulled other Fc's and FB's in the same fashion as kevin.
I've also pulled my two jetskis on a double trailer about 130 miles round trip a few times. my truck( 00 ram w/ 5.9 ) got worse gas milage, and with an open diff would spin on the slippery dock. the 10th AE never had an issue. i wish i could get the pic off my phone with a busted screen.
ive got a hitch i found on an fc in the local pull it yourself.

I just installed the Curt #11603 trailer hitch on my S5. No issues with fitment of bumper cover clearance. I also have a small Harbor Freight trailer that I use for track day event for hauling the track rubber/rims and larger tool box. It has worked out well for several other cars and should do just fine for the RX7. Now I just need to install the wiring harness kit.
