Is anybody Running NITROUS on their RX-7's
I've been using this forum for quite awhile now and I have never seen any good threads on using nitrous oxide as the primary power adder on a RX-7. I have had my nitrous system for over a year and a half, but I have only used it a few times because of the lack of knowledge about nitrous on rotary engines. Before I opened my 6-ports on my car I blew the intake tube right off my throttle body with a 50 shot. After I opened the 6-ports I never had any more problems with running nitrous. I went to the track, and I hit the nitrous at half track (50 shot) and gained 4 mph in the quarter mile. A week or two later I found out that I had blown my Apex seals. I don't believe that nitrous caused this because my car had been running like crap for a while before I took it to the track. I put synthetic oil in it and it started to smoke when I shifted gears, so next I put a product called sea foam in it because all the hot rod guys swore by it saying that it fixes dirty fuels systems and cleans carbon deposits out of the motor. But that was for piston engines. Are Apex seals softer than piston rings. Could the sea foam eaten away the Apex Seals? I have a new engine now and I would like to have some confidence in running nitrous through this engine. So if anybody has any experience running nitrous on RX-7's your knowledge would be very helpful.

Ok, this is just what I'd think...
1st, you don't run synthetic oils on rotarys, as a general rule. Some will debait, but I find it's best to err on the side of caution. Synthetics don't burn clean, which might have leaded to the buildup, and the reason you added sea foam.
2nd, I would think anythign strong enough to eat away carbon, would also strip oil. Bad on oil-injected rotary engineds.
Ran w/o oil in the engine. Metal + Metal = POP.
That's just one of the many possible situations. Who knows... I'm probably wrong.

My nitrous system is a Nitrous Express Wet System. I have only used the jets for the 50 and 25 shot, never anything higher. I have put a Welbro fuel pump on my car and a Crane Hi-6. I almost put bigger injectors on it, but when I talked to the guys at rx-7.com they told me not to mess with bigger injectors. They said I won't have any problems running lean when I use nitrous.
I almost forgot. The engine I put in my car has a warrenty on it, and when I picked the car up the guy at the shop told my not to run nitrous on it because it would void the warrenty. Is there any way a person could tell if I was running nitrous on my engine if something did happen to it. I know on piston engines, that nitrous causes some pistons to melt but that is because they are running very lean do to a huge shot of nitrous. But I don't know if there is any way for a mechanic to find out I was running nitrous on my engine if he tore it down?

Its unlikely he would be able to tell. It'll just look like a normal broken apex seal.
Did you retard the timing at all? What were your jetting sizes, bottle pressure? Did you check the fuel pressure? Did you dry test the system? Where did you place your fogger? In what gear and rpm were you hitting the shot?

i have a zex kit on 86 gxl, i also blew the intake tube off the elbow that hooks to the throttle body running a 55 shot, but that did that because i did that afm trick and my car was running way to rich. so i fixed the afm and i now am running a 65 shot and havent had any probs with it. i have a cold air intake(homemade),unorthodox racing underdrive pulley, mindtrain header, bonez cat, and apexi dunk single muffler. lets just say it screams when you hit the button. i think as long as you run a smaller shot you will be fine, expecially with a new engine.

after i opened the six ports with the air pump mod I never had any backfires or problems with the nitrous. the NX "Shark" nozzle is in the recommended position 2 to 6inches away from the throttle body. A freind and I tested the to make that the fuel side of the solenoid worked by disconnecting the nitrous line from the nozzle, closing the bottle and activating the nitrous, the motor bogged rich so obviously the fuel solenoid was working. Never checked the fuel pressure but also haven't seemed to had any problems. Bottle pressure was overlooked, I had no guage, but I only ran the nitrous when the bottle was full. I did try retarding the timing but had problems with it due my unfamiliarity with a distributorless system. I don't know what rotary engines like but on V-8 engines timing retarding isn't neccesary until over 100hp increases are seen. With normal timing i've never noticed detonation on the nitrous. With the timing retarded the overall performance of the car was way off of normal. I hit the nitrous at half track in third gear at 4000rpm. I had previously run 16.50 with no nitrous amidst massive tire frying wheel spin followed by a horrible bog on the 1-2 shift. When i last raced it when the motor was going bad i ran **** poor in the 17's with the nitrous. The nitrous does work a 55hp shot activated at half track gave me consistently 7mph at the big end. Also to whom it may concern "NOS" is not a power adder, it is an acronym for Nitrous Oxide Systems. So if we speak in abbreviations then I don't have "NOS" on my car, I have "NIX" damn that crappy movie , damn that crappy movie.

some guy here had a 75shot dry kit running 13's in 1/4..but his engine is going out the door, hm wonder why. arent you suppose to use wet kits or there better on the car if you dont have added fuel or whatnot?

I think Its time to add a section to that write-up on tuning a nitrous system.
The running excessively rich with nitrous injection cuased a nitour backfire, where combustion occurred back through the intake manifold, and blew off the easiest pop off... a piece of plastic intake hose. You're lucky that was all that went wrong. On bigger shots, it's possible to blow apart the entire aluminum intake manifolds, making for some deadly projections.

yeah scathcart, you are right, my post didnt really have a point, and yes i know its over used. but the day i posted that my friends and i were all jokin about nos so yeah it kinda fit in on my perspective, and yes the grammer and spelling did suck, they still do, cuase to tell you the truth, most of the time when im typing on a forum, people dont grade what i do, it was a fast coment that i really didnt care if i dotted the i's or crossed the t's. thats the only reason i was kinda "cranky" becuase, when i want to im a good writer i pride myself on that, it just, i dont know feels like a misconception?????? eh well you win this one! haha, the battle that is, the war isnt over, muahhaha j/k
