Anybody mount the FMIC like this?

I have a turbo ls1 swap non intercooled right now.

Was wondering if you rotary guys ever mounted the intercooler farther behind the bumper in the middle section where the coolant reservoir and hood latch is? I can't remember but I think that area may be where the oil cooler is on a rotary setup.

Wanted to know your pros and cons of each location? Some quick measurements show that the middle section can hold a 26L * 16h * 4.5" core.

Here is the picture of where I'm thinking of mounting. Obviously I will relocate the coolant overflow tank.

No, a straight vertical intercooler setup in front (toward bumper) of the radiator but not tucked under the bumber like the traditional fmic. In the same area as where the coolant overflow is.

that's where the old HKS kit mounts. I got a starion in mine in that same position and it works fine.

Pfffft....you think a V-mount will fit in that engine bay? Its filled by some unfathomably huge monstrosity.

All personal taste aside, that looks like a fairly clean swap! And a turbo LS?

That's where my ARC intercooler was mounted, it was a bit tight on top because I kept the coolant reservoir there.

That's exactly how I have mounted my intercooler.

It is behind the bumper support and fairly far back near the rad. As my car is an '86, my coolant bottle was somewhere else so I didn't have to move it.

Anyone have any links or pics of the install or where to buy the core?

stock starion and evo fmic's probably not be big enough. I need a big one that will support 700whp. I'll probably have to buy a custom made core.

stock evo coolers are nice aluminum and are lighter than many coolers of its size.

Not to mention thermal efficiency of the aluminum.

I have mine mounted there as well, didnt have to relocat the oil cooler but did have to move the overflow. Fits nicely though only problem is that my piping hits my headlight motors a little bit.

The oil cooler, rad and all the stuff in that area is all in stock locations.

I believe my cooler is 24 x 16 (or 18) x 3. I did have to make new end tanks which pointed the inlet/outlet pipes towards the engine bay though.

You can't weld stainless (or any steel for that matter) to aluminum. Their ALL for the most part 100% aluminum, some OEM's using platic end tanks. The reason some are HEAVY is because its most likely bar and plate instead of tube and fin construction. Both have merits and downfalls.

Just to let you know.

More like polished stainless or smething. I know this because my brother bought a bigger replacment for his evo and it weighs an obviously weights more by holding both in your hands.
You shouldn't spread bad information, thats what the honda forums are for

I think most people mount them about 6"-8" farther to the front tucked into the bumper. Probably required bumber triming and maybe support trimming. That would allow you to run a wider cooler. But in the coolant overflow area you can have a taller fmic and no bumber modification.

Old School FMIC

No bumper cutting
No Air Pump removal
No PS pump relocation
No Battery relocation
Just one little 3" by 3" hole made next to the resistor pac was the total modification needed to install.
