Anybody ever oil starve their differential?

Cause i just did

I made a trip to my buddies house ~120 miles away on saturday. Trip there was fine. On the way back though my rearend was howling like a madman. Turns out that the last guy to work on it decided it was a good idea to tie a rag around the left axle part that comes out the diff becasue the seal was leaking instead of speding 6 bucks and a half an hour to fix it. So i was runing on about a half a pint of black black fluid.

My question is: has anyone ever done this, and if so, is the howling being caused by a bearing going dead, or did i actually screw up my hypoid gear and now i'm running a timebomb? Another thing: has anyone ever rebuilt their rearend? How much and how difficult was it?

88 tII

Thanks for any advice guys <sigh> just another problem to add to the list.

I don't think the rearend would be that difficult, but you could probably pick one up at a junkyard that's in good shape for the same money.

The halling is probably the bearings heating up and giving out, but you won't know until you open it up.

i dunno about you, but TII rear ends aren't really readily available at salvage yards. If you want to replace it, you should check the parts for sale section, or you can just rebuild it. i don't know what rebuilding it entails though... I wanna know how to do it myself. ^_^
