Just remember- it sucks more power to produce more juice. You don't get something for nothing (cool Rush song)

Yes, a very very slight loss in hp will come from the alt, but nothing noticeable

You can't get somethin for nothin, just like Wayne said. The higher output alt will draw a VERY slight more power from the engine, but I wouldn't call it noticeable, or even a con in conjunction with all the pros.

I have it installed on my TII with dual pulleys....the car feels just as strong as it was before
but I have full exhaust so it might make up for any losses

I think it's a good mod, my lights don't dim anymore when I have all the electronics going (stereo, headlights, etc) & press the brakes
my FD alt was rated by my mechanic at 120amps

No one will ever notice any loss.... but it is there, like less than 1 hp most likely

S4 requires a plug adapter of some sort yes? S5 it will hook straight up.

No, just put insulated female blade connectors onto the wires coming off the harness with extra wire and run those to the alt via the correct connector it goes to. That's what I did!!

oh oh! if you don't chose to keep your alt or upgrade, you've still made a choice

I actually got my setup from him.

Ups: Saw better voltage across the board, even at idle. Dimming light problem went away.
Down: more engine draw, it wasn't noticable though. I had a problem on install which I talked to silverrotor about. IIRC w came to an agreement that I was an isolated case: The b+ Post of the alternator was bottoming out on the UIM. I had to swing the b+ post out of the way. It sat about 2 mm away from the UIM after installed. For the next four months I was chewing through belts about 1 set/mo. The dual alternator pulley was either milled incorrectly, or was never meant for this application.
I had the great idea of removing the s5 dual alt pulley and installing it on my s6 alternator. Unfortuately, the pulley shafts are different and the install of the pulley would be more of a PITA than I was beggining to think it was worth.
So eventaully, after bying my 4th set of belts, I decided to give up and reinstall my s5 alternator. It went in without a hitch and the stock location of the s5 B+ was fine (duh). When i looked at the s6 alternator after it had been removed, the entire b+ post had been severly damaged. The casing that protected it from shorting out on metal had completely been cracked and falling off. I traded the alternator off two project84 who is planning on reworking the b+ post and installing it in his s4.

Thats my story. BTW, I have my hands on a 150amp universal alternator. It was given to me, so its worth seeing if I can get it to work. Even new they don't cost more than $250 though. And it would put out (and draw more engine power) then a stock s6 alt would-- well after custom fabbing the brackets to get it to mount to the s5 location.

Silverrotor had/has a great part. Perhaps my problems were isolated to my specific install. The alternator did work great after the problems getting installed were overcome.

Easy to figure out parasitic draw...

1hp equals to about 750 watts?
100A x 12V = 1200 watts
Throw in friction and loss of efficiency, I'd round it up to 2hp equivalent.
Hell, even at 3hp, that's the max hp loss at 100A max output from the alternator.
Now, in reality, the alternator rarely sees output that high.

So a few hp loss isn't going to hurt.

If you're doing the math I think you are, then....

100A x 12V = 1200watts

1200watts / 750watts = 1.6hp

60A (s4) x 12V = 720watts

720watts / 750watts = 0.96hp

So.. 1.6hp - 0.96hp = 0.64hp

So if these numbers are all correct that you've given us you're looking at not even a 1hp difference, right? No big deal at all

1 horsepower [electric] = 746 watt
Straight from: http://www.onlineconversion.com/power.htm
