There is somthing to be said about driver skill and consistency. Stay stock for now and don't be worried that you might (probably) will finish last. keep good rubber and brakes on the car. But most of all, Have fun.

If you want to get in good with the club and "help" out... come in early to help set up and stay late to help clean the place up. A lot of guys/gals come to get their rocks off racing, but don't think of the work it takes to make it possible.

And don't waste money on "mods" now. At your experience, it's not the right time for "mods". If anything, tires is your best bet... if for no other reason than to not wear out your daily driver tires... look on some of the rotary sites for used race tires in your wheel size and go from there. They can get expensive new. Besides, don't you want to know what your stock Mazda machine will do... if you do, you will see the difference your eventual mods will make.

And oh yea... safety equipment... you should always go with as much safety equipment as you can practically afford... Helmet, harness, fire extinguisher, shoes, etc. all are good ideas. And will do you more good than a cat back exhaust.

One more thing... most of the guys will not mind you riding along when they take a lap... you can learn A LOT by doing this. Take advantage of it. It's kind of like working in a university/teaching hospital... and you are a resident doctor... haha. If you have questions about something... just ask, then don't hesitate to jump in and get your hands dirty.

Learn the guys that really like helping newbs. A lot of guys REALLY love this stuff and love nothing more than passing it on... meet these people and suck it up like a sponge.

One last thing... the shiniest car usually isn't the fastest... don't worry about "looking good". Practice and be good. It has nothing to do with looks.

It is really geat to ride along in a fast driver's car and also have an experienced drived ride along in your car but the club's insurance policy often will not allow that.

It's dissapointing.
