Be prepared to work. I just got my first 7 about 2 months ago. I was prepared to put in work on the car, but didn't expect this much. So far, I haven't driven the car once. Been fixing random problems. I just now got it started again (spewing smoke everywhere). Hopefully the smoke will die down after having it running for a while.

Now to fix my transmission, fuel tank, coolant buzzer, redo OMP block-off, rewire Air Bypass Solenoid Valve.... etc.

But....... I enjoy the work so hopefully you will too.

I hate answering for him, but my brother is away, so. . . .
It's a 1987 GTU N/A with 80K.
It runs fine. That's. . . . about all I know.

buy the haynes manual, it's a life saver. makes everything ten times easier for me, being a home mechanic noob. Also gives tips on fixing various issues with the car.

These are all good ideas. But the golen rules of rex's... Change the oil at least every 3k miles, don't use synthetic (unless you want to take the risk), and watch the temp. gauge

my advice is *NEVER EVER EVER LET ANYBODY ******* TOUCH YOUR CAR, YOU WILL REGRET IT* unless its a rotary specialist type person... get a FSM and do everything yourself.. FSM = factory service manual, you can find an online version at www.iluvmyrx7.com and a few other places. kkthxbye

be prepared for frustration of problems, and the gratification of fixing them (or the painful feeling of your wallet being drained if you pay someone to take care of it)

jays83gsl,

It's not that much work if you buy a well maintained car. Now if you buy a cheap / questionable rx-7, at least make sure it starts & warms up so:

1) you can get the HOT compression numbers off the engine (take it to the Mazda dealership so you can get all 6 compression numbers)
2) you can verify the coolant system isn't spewing bubbles due to a blown water seal

If you verify these 2 things, then a questionable car can probably be fixed up fairly quickly & inexpensively.
