Anti-Theft Locking Starter????
I was looking into buying a 87 Rx7. Everything is in excellent shape, but the owner says, and I quote,
"The car has a strong engine, but the factory Anti- theft system has locked the ignition preventing it from starting. Alarm just needs to be removed."
Anyone have thoughts about this? Im not familiar with anything like this and really have no idea. and if thats the case, how difficult is it to remove the alarm? Any info would help please, Thanks.

a. Take it to a professional to have it removed.
b. remove the second harness of the chasis cpu and disable the security system (and about 5 other features in our cars that you will miss)
c. fix "broken" security issue

Thats bullshit. Pull the battery lines off and then put them back on. It will reset the alarm and the car should start. Also you can use the key to unclock the door and it will disable it. I bet you 20 bucks thats not the problem with it. I bet its flooded out and needs the fuse trick done to start it. Oh yeah never buy a rx-7 that won't start. Get a compression check before you buy anything

I agree with bukwild about the security system.
but I will buy a nice(body, interior) 7 even the engine is flooded or whatever, if the price is really good. most of the time, you can steal a deal from the owner if the car won't "start". my friend bought 2 88 TII "no running" for real cheap, then he started both cars with very little effort. hahaha. but I never have such luck, though. :-(

Actaully, yeah. I shoudl have made it more clear. If the alarm immobilizes the car, it does so via disabling the starter. If the starter turns and the engine does not start IT IS NOT THE ALARM.
Edit: Put the car in gear and rock it back a couple inches in the driveway with your knees on the bumper. doing this should turn the engine. If the engine doesn't turn (nor does the starter), you're looking at the engine being locked up. thats far worse then just the starter saying no.

How much is he wanting for this car?
It may be worth it to buy it anyway and see if you can get it on the road.
Of course, if he wants $3000 for a car that can't crank, screw that.

Thanks for the help guys. He wants $2500 for it, and the body and interior are in awesome shape, i know i can get him down on the price, its been for sale for a while. My only thing is that this will be my Daily driver....my only car, so i need something i can fix cheap and easy, especially since it wont move, cant get it home to work on it really. I'll contact the guy see how he says about letting me check it out ......before i give him any money(cant afford a car that wont run).
Thanks again, I'll let ya know how it goes.

Oh yeah, another question. If its flooded, will it crank over? How long does it stay flooded? becuase im sure hes tried to start it again..... I'll call him today see what the "symtoms" are on it. Thanks.

Daily driver. I say no right off the bat. Don't try and buy a daily driver that doesn't even start. Get a cheap honda or something and find a rx-7 for a toy. Something that can wait a week to get fixed until you get paid.

Ok, so heres the deal. I talked to the guy, he said it turns over like it wants to start, but wont....and that it had been about a month since it was started, and he hadnt tried it since it wouldnt start. like it had a fuel cut-off switch, but it doesnt. The guy admitted to not knowing anything about 7's, and thats why hes selling it, now i dont either, but i know how to use a computer..... So anymore thoughts or ideas would help, ill search more here. Thanks guys.

Well, personally I'd lowball him, because honestly you have NO idea what's wrong with it. It could be as simple as needing to do the ATF trick and change the sparkplugs. It could be really messed up and need a new engine. You really won't know until you mess around with it a bit, there are a ton of things that could make it not crank like that.
