Quite a bit actually. For 10 years or so before I got into RX-7s, I was an electronics hobbiest. Built everything from little FM transmitters, to high power 3 phase variable frequency inverters for AC motors.

I'd really like to see a home microcomputer run an entire automotive engine management system myself.
I think there is a group of people who have done it in Ottawa. Last I heard, it was a 20B. It was mainly an experiment, and I really don't even know if it is true. I'm sure that many have tried...

Just thinking about all those D/A converters just makes me cringe though...
I'm not saying it's impossible - it's just a waste of time once you see the beauty of using uC's for this application...

Obviously.

Ah, okay, so we're not getting lost on the subject...great!

It's all about economics...
Market dynamics stabilizes at an equilibrium at a certain point.
Tuners are making money at this particular pricing.
There are enough people willing to pay this pricing to keep the tuners to keep offering the service.

Sometime three years ago. But of course, in the meantime I had to spend several months reporting and rebuilding an engine that a certain shop seized. And working only a few hours a week on a car (after all, I do have a day job and a life) means progress is slow.
