Another use for the water trick - finding exhaust leaks!
So I did the water trick on my girl after work today. In a spot where the car was sheltered from the wind/breeze (not for any particular reason, though.)
And there I am, under the hood, engine's just under 3k and she's sipping away and stumbling a lot - when I suddenly notice what looks like smoke coming up from the transmission tunnel/back of the engine.

I cap the hose I'm using and stick my head over where the 'smoke' is coming up. Nope, it's not coming off of the engine. It's coming up the transmission tunnel.
I drop down beside the car and look underneath. The 'smoke' is coming from the gutted hi-flow cat.

I reach in and stick my hand in the smoke, then remove it and sniff. Nothing? Try again? Still doesn't smell at all.
I rub my hand (wearing cotton gloves all through this) on the cat and look at it - my fingers are dry and still no scent.
Wait a minute! STEAM! I've known for a while that there was a leak from that cat by the noise. Now I really really know.
So I go back to the trick. And shortly thereafter notice the steam again, but now it's coming up both from the tranny tunnel and under the passenger-side door. I cap the line and drop down again. Now the smoke is curling out of the end of the mid-pipe, at the flange that connects to the pre-silencer. Guess the gasket there is pooched, too.
I go back to the trick, but give her a bit more throttle 'til she's nice and smooth. The steam stops appearing.
So there ya go. Got an exhaust leak you can't find? Now you can clean up the inside of your motor AND troubleshoot at the same time.
