Question Another Light Switch question (Sorry!)

Read through the FAQ and all threads I could find. Interesting reading!

86 Base model, typical no dash or outside lights other than headlights, turn and stoplights. Checked fuses, all ok. Verified 12vdc at w/g wire (12vdc in) at switch, nothing out on r/g. Had won relacement gauge surround w/switches on Ebay. Plugged it in but suspect bad light switch in it. The headlights immediately came up and on even though switch was off and a loud buzzing came from near the lights that was increasing in pitch. Immediately unhooked battery. Thought I smelled the burning smell of phenolic but didn't wait to see.

Still strongly suspect switch. Have run through wiring with ohmmeter and think things are ok.

Does anyone know what the average resistance reading on the r/g toward the lights? I get about 16 ohms. I know the reading should be low as the filaments don't have much resistance but am curious if anyone has ever measured this.

I cut down the plastic housing on my old switch to see how it was made. On the pc board where the main light switch and dash illumination connect the pc connection was burned clear through the board. I haven't taken the replacement apart yet but will.

I also used a jumper wire on the plug to insure everything works. Could verify dash lights and up/down headlights but during daylight couldn't tell if taillights came on by myself. The wire got hot pretty quick so I couldn't leave it plugged in to check for fear of damage.

I will be doing the Radshack relay mod to solve this once and for all.

Sorry to bring back up an old thread but curious if I am on right track. Appreciate any opinions or ideas.

Tnx Fred
