another depower steering thead..

hey guys,

I know theres lot of talk about how to properly depower your steering on the forum and the generally agreed upon best method seems to be the one in the archives from flying Miata. however, ive seen a lot of posts on different threads mentioning play in the steering shaft since it doesn't have the support of the seal after you cut it off. and ive seen a few more people mentioning titaniumTTs writeup from back in the day that covers some extra things like welding the pinion quill to eliminate any play in the rack. his writeup seems to be gone, so can any OG's shed some light on this?
also, I drive a rhd s5 if this has any altering effects on any procedures.
thanks,
carrington

hes the one that posted the flying Miata technique I think. and a lot of the other depowering stuff ive read. but the things I most need to know are whether this will leave play without the support of the seal and maybe some pics of where titaniumTT was saying to weld the pinion quill. I cant find anything definitive about these.
thanks,
carrington

If nobody is giving you info then I'd suggest a "further dig".
Check the threads to see who has actually done a Depower and then PM them and ask them.

I never tried without welding the quill. Unfortunately I recently deleted a picture I had taken of mine when the work was done. If you're doing all that work, and it's all taken apart, it's not very expensive to have someone weld that up, I would do it regardless.

I have depowered my rack with out any play on in, to be honest, i don't understand where the play should be comming from?

The seal is not there to support the shaft, it is there to seal.

Below is a picture I took when I took mine apart. I can't remember exactly, but I belive that the part that sits around the shaft on the left is what the passenger side shaft support is. (correct me if I'm wrong).

On the drivers side you have that nut where you can adjust the play on the shaft.

Not sure if you've heard of it, but there is a pretty good search engine out called "google".
