What cars (years and models) came with an aluminum hood (besides the TIIs)? ANy one know? Also how do you tell the difference? Is there some easy way besides the weight that can help you tell?

a magnet is a great answer, or your own arm strength will tell, the difference in weight is about 30 lbs or more.

Here are the models that "should" or may have alum hoods.

86-87 build date "Sport" models (in Canada i think they were called GX)

Most convertibles from each year had alum hoods, although I have seen more than a few that did not have them.

89-90 GTUs (not GTU models)

91 GXL's (many came with alum hoods as production of the FC ended)

 

actually around 22 lbs difference...LOL u dont need a magnat.. U can just tell .. duuuuu

I think my list is pretty comprehensive. Anyone other models GXL, GTU, Base that come with alum hoods are either swaps or factory accidents, which have been knwon to exist.

 

20lbs. for the aluminum
45lbs. for the non-aluminum
I thought all verts have the aluminums due to the 300lb plus weight used for reinforcements.

 

I thought so too, but i have seen 2 original owner cars that had steel hoods.

And i have seen a couple more verts' that had them.. but were not orignial owners.. <swaps i presume>

 

I have an 86 Base That has an alluminum hood on it STOCK from the factory...

 

wow, that is prety cool... lots of one offs out there... that is not a common find.. ; )

 

By any chance is it an auto tranny version?

 

I also have an 86 Base that came with aluminum hood stock.

 

My 86 base also had an aluminum hood, production 10/85.
