Alternator over charge

My alternator over charged to 30v!!!! Messed up something on my headlights... Does anyone know why it might have overcharged to such an extent? and is it possible for it to blow the lamps of the headlights and not the fuses or switch? or the ecu for that matter (car runs fine, ecu is in good condition, just wondering why the headlights were the only system in the car with problems)

Car is an 88' vert

30 volts? right..

30 volts would fry tons of things on the car. get a real voltmeter, you possibly might not have any charging system issues.

Mine started over charging on my first fc. Just got a new one for like $100, problem solved.

My headlights, reverse lights, and one of my tail lights got fried in the process, just replaced all of them too, no problems after that.

edit: mine was nowhere near 30v though haha

Sounds like relay in alt died, but I'm skeptical of 30v even making it to the gauge before it fired something to read that high.

30 volts is what the machine at 2 different autozones said, i did not test it myself. Headlights stopped working about a half hour before the alt. belt broke and took the car off the road. I put a new belt on and the volt gauge was buried along with a horrifying screech coming from the alt.

The guys that tested it didnt believe it either. This is not my issue though, I have fixed this already. I need to know how to test just the lamp in the headlight, or another way to figure out what is wrong with the headlights. relay switch is in working condition, the grounds are good, and all of my other lights work which suggests that it is not the headlight switch that is fried.

Also, if anyone could explain why it did not fry everything else like it should have, I would be great full.

pull the headlights out and check the voltage at the connector with the headlights on.

Find the Headlight relay and check to see if either Red wire has constant voltage to it as it should, and if it does not then the Head fuse in the Engine fuse box is likely blown. If the Red wires at this relay have constant voltage then place a jumper wire to the White/Blue wire in this relay and place the other end to a ground. If the lights don't come on then your problem is likely the headlight switch and or harness.
