disconnect the batt, and check for continuity at the b+( the big wire on the alternator) between battery - or a good ground, it should be disconnect'd from the alternator when doing this.

i would also take the alternator up to advance/autozone and have them test it, it may be just a bad alternator, but it also looks like it could be a short. i am going thru the same sorts.

My alternator tests good. and doesnt try to lock up/burn belts if i take the BTN 60A fuse out, so i have a wiring issue that is on going and not solved at this moment. it will last 2-3 weeks with no issues and the btn fuse in, and then all of a sudden, squeek and pop the belt.

Does the alternator spin relatively freely by hand? Belt is tight I assume?

If the belt is tight enough, let somebody check the alternator. Could be a bad regulator (are the lights at the dashbord / interior brighter then normal?)

looks like a bad alternator (causing the alt pulley not spin freely). The main engine pulley is trying to force the belt around the alt pulley which is causing the smoke. Theory can be confirmed by removing belt and trying to spin alt pulley. Like others suggested, take the alternator to go get tested. It's free.

dont kill that new belt if you keep running it like that.

Two choices:

1.) Disconnect the wiring (Both the big one on the output post and the field exciter/light connector.) Then start car.
2.) Remove belt and turn pulley by hand.

Report back.

I bought another alternator anyway. I might have just replace it. The one I have right now has rust on the pulley and the body.
And my car idling is fine, just because the weather has been cold as hell and the car havent been started for a week+ but thanks for the concern guys. I really appreciate it

This is an old thread, but perhaps it should be revived.
My 89 does the same thing, even after replacing the alternator tonight.
I have checked pulley alignment and belt deflection, and run a Bando 2320 belt, behind a 3L220 yoohoo belt. The yoohoo belt has good deflection for its length and does not heat up or squeal. My water pump turns freely and does not weep. I have checked seating of my main pulley and all is well; same story goes for the fan and clutch. I have to have my car asap tomorrow morning and am stumped here, guys. I'm considering ordering an N350-18-318 belt from Atkins and seeing if it makes a difference. It's the original Mistuboshi belt.

EDIT: I also noticed when I removed the old alternator that there was not a washer on it at all. Is there supposed to be one?I hear people talk about them, but I have thought this may be my problem as well, but it's a long shot.

PELE - I disconnected wiring, started the car, not a peep through the alternator or belt. The pulley does not get hot, nor does the alt casing. What next?
