alternator belt adjustment piece?

I was reading my haynes, looking at the pictures to try and see if I can find out what or if there is a piece missing for my alt.

See my alternator has a bolt and a nut the nut has a small clip on it for the wiring harness and obviously goes behind the alt. However when im tightneing it, there is about a 1" gap from the water pump housing, to the alternator. If I wanted to, I could slide it forward or backwards easily. The only thing that holds it in place is the arm that connects the alt to the waterpump housing to adjust BELT TIGHTNESS.

So my question is, how do you adjust the alternator forward or backward? I feel as if there is a piece missing from my setup that does this properly.. Or is everything fine and the only thing you need is the arm, as it aligns the alt pully with the other pullys perfecty?

thx

Yes, you are missing the spacer that's supposed to be in that gap. You can see it on p77 of the Haynes.
