Many use a S5 or FD alternator.

Is silverrotor selling his FD alternators anymore? Might PM him for info...
FD alt is your best bet for the higher amp, but it might require you to do some VERY basic wiring... If you can't handle the effort to make the wiring change then sell your car. And I mean that in the nicest way.

Get an FD alt, then a large capacitor, you'll never run out of power then.

You can't plug and play with a FD alt on a S4. No matter what it needs minor wiring changes.

Find an alternator shop. Tell them you want your alternator rebuilt with higher output. Give them the core, get it rebuilt, then put it back in. Plug-and-play solution.

A local shop in Raleigh, NC will do it for you. I think they quoted me at like $150. I'm just waiting for mine to go out on me and then I will have it done. A friend of mine had his 88 T2 alternator upgraded.

I agree with this one. I had mine rebuilt a few years ago to 155 amps. Cant remember the price though......

I had it done by Romain Electric in Seattle.

The charge (reference) circuit needs to be switched to the battery on a FD alt, while the S4 FC is wired to have it on ignition.

that sounds like a great freaking idea, i think ill just get my alt rebuilt, instead of paying like 400 bucks for a new unit that is custom made, lol.

Icemark, have any experiance with rebuilt alternators built for more AMPs?

Not for the FC. I normally just use a S5 alt in all my FC's (even the S4 models) and find that in good condition it is just fine.

But again, since my Sport I have not put any big huge stereo systems in my FCs either.

yea thats my problem with everything running including my system I had to adjust my idle higher to compinsate for the lost ampage. That sounds like a good idea have someone rebuild it w/ higher amps. I will have to see if theres any place around here that will do it. Thanks
guys

Systems in a sports car. Wanna know how to make the car faster? Get rid of your massive subs and amps...it might help .

On a serious note...I had trouble finding any shop in AZ that would do it, so I ended up just getting the stock S5 alt rebuilt and it works fine to power everything, including an e-fan. Of course...I don't have a system. Thats what my DD is for

I called around here in Chicago and was told the s4 alt. case was to small to make more powerful. So I haunted the 3rd gen parts for sale section till I found an FD one. I should be recieving and installing it by this weekend. If I can install my radio and sound system, I'm sure I can do the FD alt mod. Just do a search on FD and alternator and there will be over 50 threads regarding the install.
