dropped my diff today because it did a big bang and car wouldnt move anymore...anywhoo i read some old posts of people telling me how to get the diff out...many seem to think you can do it without dropping the rear subframe. THESE PEOPLE ARE WRONG! There are 2 bolts on the front diff mount that CANNOT be removed unless you get them from the top, meaning the subframe must be unbolted so it lowerd down a foot or so so you can acces them. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY AS I TRIED FRUITLESSLT FOR NEARLY 2 HOURS TO GET THESE BOLTS FROM THE BOTTOM!!!! Anyways just thought i would set everyone straight .

Actually you can get to those two front bolts if you un-bolt the subframe on the drivers side and the sublink, Pull the subframe down slightly and reach up in there with your socket wrench and extension.

No need to drop the whole subframe...

I have done this countless times to remove the diff assembly.

I think he meant without having to drop the subframe at all.

That is correct. As Mark stated, it can be done just by lowering it slightly, however, if you have air tools and hydraulic jack(s), dropping the whole assembly is quite an easy job, and therefore a lot easier to do the work while the assembly is on the ground.

i have arms. And a hydraulic jack and jackstands. took me 10 minutes to drop the entire subframe...all you gotta do is unbolt the shocks and the subframe mounts and theres this thingy that i dont kno what its called you gotta unbolt too...so 5 bolts in all. It doesnt take very long...maybe took me 20 minutes to line up the new subframe and diff. By hand. just make sure you unclip the brake lines. And yeah i blew up the diff...all the spider gears are completely stripped.

Come on guys. After you get the driveshaft and brake lines disconnected and the shocks unbolted, it is only four bolts to drop the whole thing. It is a whole lot easier to work the rear suspension on the ground than on the car. Get real or get a shop to do it for you!!!

alright guys i have needed to change the diffy for about a year now and i have a diff laying around and I have been too lazy to get to it. So basic story is....if i drop the subframe while the car is jacked i have to have the frame jacked on bricks or some other jacks cuz the car obviously wont sit right without the subframe bollted because you will have no suspension at this point am i correct?

It sits fine with no rear subframe.

Just put the jackstands on the body. I used some large blocks of wood so I didn't dent the undersside of the body.

Now my problem will be re-assembling it......when I get the vert chassis I will bolt on my TII subframe on ....but I am trying to figure out how to lift it and align it.......I mean just do the reverse of dropping it seems like the logical explanation but won't it be harder that dropping it?

Dude, just pull the subframe. Makes things a lot easier. You dont even have to get it all the way out, just lower it a bit.

okay, once you get the 2 bolts that hold the diff in meaning the subframe and diff are one again, just jack the entire assembly a bit and then put the whole thing on jackstands...get underneath and push up, the mounts should line up and you can push the rear mounts up, move the jackstands up a notch, and keep repeating this process until the subframe and diff are back in....sounds confusinbg but it took me only 20 minutes to reinstall the entire assembly, including the shocks.
